On an island like Iceland, no rivers are very long. None of the rivers are important as a means of navigation due to the impracticality of settlements in the Highlands of Iceland where they originate. The most important rivers are:
South Iceland
- Hvítá
- Krossá
- Kúðafljót
- Markarfljót
- Múlakvísl
- Ölfusá (the greatest flow of an Icelandic river)
- Rangá
- Skeiðará
- Skógá
- Sog
- Þjórsá (the longest river of Iceland, 230 km)
- Tungnaá
West Iceland
Westfjords
North Iceland
- Blanda
- Eyjafjarðará
- Eystri Jökulsá
- Fnjóská
- Glerá
- Héraðsvötn
- Hörgá
- Jökulsá á Fjöllum
- Laxá
- Norðurá (Skagafjarðarsýsla)
- Skjálfandafljót
- Vatnsdalur
East Iceland
