Castell Vaughn Bryant was the interim president of Florida A&M University between January 2005 and May 2007.[1] She is the first woman to hold this position at the university.[2] The Board of Trustees, upon her appointment, voted that Dr. Bryant would not be eligible to apply for or hold the permanent post of President of the University. R. B. Holmes, Co-Chairman of the Presidential Search Committee, announced that hed had hoped that a new permanent president will be appointed by the end of 2006.[3] Castell Bryant resigned from her position as interim President of from FAMU on Friday May 11, 2007, leaving the university provost as acting president. Board of Trustees members are scheduled to meet and discuss the option of bringing James H. Ammons, the university’s newly elected president, to the university one month earlier then planned after concerns were raised that the university provost does not have the experience needed to run the university. She was president during the time FAMU was placed on probation and is credited with dismantling the institution's prized recruiting program which affected enrollment at the university.
After her departure from FAMU, she served as Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs at Bethune-Cookman University where she was credited with lowering enrollment at the institution.
