On 8 May 2015, a Pakistan Army Aviation Corps Mil Mi-17 transport helicopter crashed in Naltar, located in the Gilgit District of Gilgit-Baltistan region, northern Pakistan.[1] At least 6 people were killed in the crash.[2] The dead include the ambassadors of Norway and the Philippines.[3][4][5][6]

Crash

The helicopter crashed into a school building, although no immediate casualties on the ground has been reported. Among the killed were Ambassador of Philippines to Pakistan Domingo D. Lucenario Jr., Ambassador of Norway to Pakistan Leif Larsen and the wives of the Malaysian and Indonesian ambassadors.[1][7] Two pilots were also killed.[7] The helicopter casualties were confirmed by the Director-General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR), Pakistani Major-General Asim Bajwa via Twitter.[7] The militant group Tehreek-e-Taliban attempted to claim responsibility for shooting down the helicopter,[1] however the DG ISPR ruled out the possibility of any terrorist activity and said the helicopter crashed due to a technical fault.[7] The helicopter also carried Polish and Dutch ambassadors who survived, but sustained injuries.[1]
