Ennerdale is a town in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in Gauteng, South Africa. Ennerdale was declared as a coloured group area under the apartheid regime.

According to Crankshaw (2022),

'the coloureds-only suburb of Ennerdale, which was developed later during the 1980s, was built for homeownership by the private sector and home loans were financed by private banks (Lupton, 1991: pp.20–1; 1993).' [2]

Even though apartheid ended in 1994 people still regard it as a Coloured community.

History

[edit]

Ennerdale was established as an extension to Grasmere, farmland which was meant to serve and be occupied by the white communities of Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark, however due to Apartheid, Ennerdale, the now new Township next to Grasmere was established to house the Coloured people of South Africa.

Ennerdale offers a variety of secondary and primary schools such as Mid Ennerdale Primary School, Daleview Secondary School, Ennerdale Secondary School and Fred Norman Secondary School.

Ennerdale is surrounded by areas such as Hopefield, Lawley Township, Lakeview, Lenasia, Lenasia South, Grasmere and Finetown.

Today Ennerdale has Extensions found in two wards. WARD 7: Extension 1, Extension 2, Extension 3, Extension 6, Extension 10, Extension 11, Extension 12, Extension 13, Extension 14 and Finetown.

WARD 121: Ennerdale Extension 4, Extension 5, Extension 8, Extension 9, Lawley Township and Lakeview.
