"Fight Song" is a song by American singer Rachel Platten, released as a single by Columbia Records on February 19, 2015. It appears on Platten's 2015 EP of the same name. The song has received widespread success, reaching number 10 in Platten's native United States (the Billboard Hot 100), number 6 on the Billboard Adult Top 40 chart, number 12 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, number 3 on the Australian Singles Chart, number 8 in New Zealand, number 14 on the Billboard Canadian chart, and number 1 on the Billboard digital singles chart, meaning that it was the best selling single in the USA for the week ending July 4, 2015. It has also reached number 13 on the Billboard Radio Songs chart and number 19 on their Songs of The Summer chart.
Background
Rachel Platten said of her inspiration : "Fight Song was inspired by a lot of experiences that were hurting me and that were making me feel like maybe I didn’t have a chance in this industry. I wrote it because I needed to remind myself that I believed in myself. No matter what, I still was gonna make music, even if it was on a small scale. Even if it was just for me." She also said: "I really challenged myself in writing the past couple of years to be vulnerable in my lyrics. I didn’t want to skate past what was hurting. It didn’t scare me to be vulnerable because I think that’s when you get something great."[3]
Usage in media and performances
On June 27, 2014 Rachel debuted Fight Song on We Heart It as part of an artist spotlight.[4] The song was later used in the Christmas episode of Pretty Little Liars' fifth season.[5] Platten credits the show for helping the song reach a wider audience.[6] The song was featured in promos for the fourth season of Revenge on the Seven Network in Australia[7] and also featured in the trailer for the upcoming CBS show Supergirl in May 2015.[8] It also is being featured in a commercial for Ford cars.[9]
On May 14, 2015, Platten made her television debut on Good Morning America, where she performed the song.[10] On June 13, 2015, Platten was invited by Taylor Swift to perform the song during a concert of her 1989 World Tour in Philadelphia.[11]
Music video
An accompanying music video directed by James Lees was released on May 19, 2015.[12] The shooting lasted four days.[6] Platten said of the concept: "I wanted my video to show both sides of that – my fear and pain – but I also hoped to show that sometimes to overcome battles we just have to let go."[13]
