The frequent Edinburgh to Glasgow shuttle service was formerly operated by pairs of class 27s on each end of a rake of non-air conditioned mark 2 stock. By the end of the 1970s these were in need of replacement. So 12 class 47/4s were adapted to work in push-pull formation with rakes of mark 3 stock. Renumbered as class 47s these covered the route and later the push-pull operation was extended to Aberdeen. Seen at Haymarket on 5 June 1982, 47707 "Holyrood" is seen on on an Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street service.
