Lotus is one of the most famous names in motor racing and especially in Formula 1, designed by the legendary Lotus founder, Colin Chapman, the 1957 Lotus 12 was Lotus' first ever single seater, built for Formula 2 competition and in 1958 drafted into Formula 1 as larger Climax FPF engines became available. These early cars were powered by the Coventry Climax 4 cyl engine placed as low as possible in the space frame chassis. keeping the height of the car as low as possible, a new 5 speed sequential shift trans axle was used, located at the back of the car, which proved to be quite unreliable. The Lotus 12's most visual trademark was its mag wheels.
The Lotus 12's first foray into Formula 1 was in this very car, driven by Graham Hill at Silverstone in 1958. The car was imported into Australia in 1960 by Frank Gardner. More recently back in the UK competing in the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed
