Description
English: A Middle East Soldier Revisits Britain- Life in Wartime Exeter, Devon, England, UK, October 1943
A view down Queen Street, Exeter, taken from the upper window of a building, looking across the shops to the hills and countryside beyond. Several cars can be seen, although the road is quite empty of traffic. Pedestrians can be seen going about their daily business. The large shop on the left, complete with columns and portico is 'Eastman's Ltd'. Further down the street, a sign reads: 'To-Day's Good Deed: Help YOUR Hospital. Contributions urgently needed'. Beyond that can be seen the Central Garage. On the right hand side of the photograph, the Queen's Hotel is just visible. A sign for 'Helen Tomlinson Ladies Hairdresser' can also just be seen.
This photograph was scanned and released by the Imperial War Museum on the IWM Non Commercial Licence. The image was catalogued by the IWM as created for the Ministry of Information, which was dissolved in 1946. Consequently the image and faithful reproductions are considered Crown Copyright, now expired as the photograph was taken prior to 1 June 1957.

Licensing
This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.
Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
