King's Shropshire Light Infantry
Captain English (1874-1941) was educated at Wellington College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He played cricket for Gloucestershire and played once for England in 1909.
Captain English received his commission in 1895 and served in the Second Anglo-Boer War (during which he was wounded).
He was promoted to captain in 1909 and major in 1915. During his First World War service, he was wounded again and was awarded the DSO (in 1917), the Croix de Guerre and twice Mentioned in Despatches.
He retired from the Army with the rank of lieutenant colonel on 29 November 1919.
After leaving the Army, Ernest English became an actor, performing on stage and screen.
