English: A cab end view of ex-Mt Newman MiningALCOM636 2,684 kW Co-Co diesel-electric loco no. 5497, at the Don Rhodes Mining and Transport Museum, Wilson Street, Port Hedland, Western Australia.
This locomotive was manufactured in 1975 by Commonwealth Engineering in New South Wales. Together with pairs of sister locomotives, it was used in the 1970s to haul trains of 144 ore cars carrying 17,000 tonnes of iron ore along the Mount Newman railway from Mt Whaleback to Port Hedland. Over time, regular train lengths and weights on this line were increased, with four or five M636 locomotives being used to haul them.
