Summary

Description
English: Runnymede. The Air Forces Memorial at Runnymede, Surrey, commemorates by name the 20,401 airmen who were lost in the Second World War during operations from bases in the United Kingdom and North and Western Europe, and who have no known graves. They served in Bomber, Fighter, Coastal, Transport, Flying Training and Maintenance Commands; they came from all parts of British Commonwealth and Empire, and some were from countries in continental Europe which had been over-run but whose airmen continued to fight in the ranks of the Royal Air Force. The site, on a spur of Cooper's Hill, was donated for the memorial in 1949 by Sir Eugen and Lady Effie Millington-Drake; it overlooks the Thames and the riverside meadow where Magna Carta, enshrining man's basic freedoms under law, was sealed by King John on 15 June 1215
