Summary

Description
English: Cartilage that belonged to a shark species called Saivodus striatus was found within Mammoth Cave. The Saivodus was a common ctenacanth shark from the Late Mississippian Age that was approximately the size of a modern day Great White Shark. The Saivodus cartilage that is exposed was identified to be that of a shark’s head consisting of lower jaw, indeterminate cranial cartilages, and several teeth. Shark skeletons are extremely rare because cartilage doesn't always preserve in the fossil record. This specimen was determined to be about 340-330 million years old.
