Notes When first exhibited in 1920 the present work hung alongside another oil by the artist entitled The Rice Family (now in the collection of Ferens Art Gallery, Hull as An Artist and His Family (The Rice Family)). The similarity in costume and facial features between the sitter in the present lot and the standing figure in the second oil suggests he may be the young Master Rice. Austrian artist Bernard Rice (1920-1998) studied in London at the Westminster School of Art and then the Royal Academy Schools between 1919 and 1922.[1]
