English: The author, a European gentleman, is standing next to and at the same level as a black officer in uniform wearing a turban with feather and holding a musket or gun. The black soldier is standing on the right side of the plate surrounded by Haiti’s natural landscape, including a banana tree. Rainsford is standing on the left side with the island’s coastline and several ships behind him. Depiction also includes a dog, dwellings, and palm trees.
