Tetr.io (stylised in all caps)[1] is a free-to-play block stacking puzzle game played in the web browser, with solo and multiplayer modes. It is a clone of the 1985 puzzle game Tetris, and is part of the Tetris variants and .io games genres.
Gameplay
[edit]Tetr.io is a puzzle game played in the web browser, with solo and multiplayer modes.[2][3] The game is often described as a Tetris clone,[2][4] and is part of the .io games genre.[5] Tetr.io is free to play.[4][5][6]
Tetr.io has solo modes like 40 lines, where players race to clear 40 lines as fast as possible, and Blitz, competing to attain the highest score within two minutes.[7] The game has leaderboards for the fastest times on these modes.[8] For multiplayer, there is a ranked leaderboard played in 1v1 matches (Tetra League) where a player must stack and clear blocks faster than the other, while extra blocks obstruct gameplay.[5][3][9] There is also a battle royale mode, similar to Tetris 99.[3][4][9]
The game offers a high level of customisability, such as with "soft drop factor" or "delayed auto shift".[2][6] Its gameplay differs from similar games due to its combo system (which gives extra points for successive line clears) making quads and T-spins (more difficult moves) more favourable than 4-wides (an oft-used setup for combos).[4]
History
[edit]The game was released in Infdev on 1 February 2020, with limited beta testing. The game went into a public Alpha on 21 March 2020. In August 2021, the game had around 2.6 million active players.[8] As of 10 December 2024, Tetr.io is in beta, with a new mode titled “Quick Play 2.”[10]
Reception
[edit]Publications have noted the sizeable and stable player base,[4][3] as well as the competitive nature of the multiplayer modes.[3][5] The game has received praise for its high customisability[2] and low barrier of entry.[3][2]
