March, 2010

[edit]

"Both the Left Bank (Rive Gauche) and the Right Bank (Rive Droite) are visible from the boat." Really? This is a silly sentence. How many rivers do you know where you CAN'T see both banks? Particularly in the middle of a European city? --621PWC (talk) 01:53, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Article title

[edit]

This article was originally titled Bateaux Mouches, but was changed to the present singular back in 2007 with a redirect, apparently without discussion. As used in the lead sentence, the plural form is both the name of the company and also correct if used generically. It is the most common term and better conforms to WP:NAME.  JGHowes  talk 15:09, 13 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

(non-admin closure) Bateau MoucheBateaux Mouches – The plural form is the proper name of the company and also correct if used generically --Relisted.  — Amakuru (talk) 18:10, 21 October 2015 (UTC)  JGHowes  talk 15:09, 13 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I concur; while the singular is grammatically correct, WP:COMMONNAME would dictate using the plural in English Wikipedia. Vrac (talk) 01:23, 14 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. If the article is about the boats, then Bateaux Mouches is badly written. The noun is pluralized, the adjective is not. Compagnie des Bateaux Mouches runs bateaux mouche. It runs fly boats, it does not run boats flies. If the article is about the company, then OK, but rewrite the article. Presumably, the company adopted a non-standard French, ie made-up deliberately misspelled, name so as to be able to own it. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 03:33, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@SmokeyJoe: I'm not completely fluent in French, but don't adjectives and nouns usually match up for singular/plural? Bateau rouge but bateaux rouges etc. By that token fly boats would be bateaux mouches.  — Amakuru (talk) 18:10, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Bateaux-mouche would be the grammatically correct plural, but the discussion of the finer points of French grammar miss the larger issue that these things/this company are known in English as bateaux mouches and the article should be named accordingly per WP:COMMONNAME.
