The reference seems to be from a thesis. This seems to be based on work of 8 other Greek authors. Can this be added as reference here?

Suggestion

[edit]

This article mentions Calanus as a Hindu fakir. We know for a fact that he was a gymnosophist and we also know for a fact that there is some confusion about the religious persuasion of gymnosophists. So I think it would be good to mention about the confusion or just mention that he was just a gymnosophist. I prefer the latter.--Aayush18 (talk) 23:54, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Calanus was likely to be a Hindu as Self-immolation is an practice among Hindus. Further, Calanus, directed Alexander towards his leader or guru named Dandamis, who introduced himself as Brahmin, this further points to the fact that Calanus, Dandamis and several other Gymnosophists, ten of whom were arrested for taking part in war / revolt were more likely to be Naga sadhu of Hindu sect. Jain Munis donot preach or adhere to violence, so it is likely these naked men of faith whom Greeks called gymnosophits were Hindus. However, if there are opinions that Calanus could be Jain or Buddhist - these opinions with citations are most welcome.Jethwarp (talk) 04:21, 22 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
