Should a sentence in the lead be changed?[edit]

The last sentence of the lead says, Typhoon Mawar hit Guam as a Category 4 storm on May 24, bringing hurricane-force winds and heavy rain marking the strongest storm to hit the island in decades. Later in the article, it says, On May 24, the center of Mawar passed about north of the northern tip of Guam as a Category 4 typhoon, around 9 pm local time... Since Mawar did not made landfall in Guam, can we accurately say it "hit Guam"? I'm wanting to get some thoughts on this. My personal opinion would be to change to the sentence to Typhoon Mawar impacted Guam as a Category 4 storm on May 24, bringing hurricane-force winds and heavy rain marking the strongest storm to cause impacts to the island in decades. Placement of NEXRAD radar image[edit]

Should the radar image in the Preparations and impact section be moved to the left side of the article or stay on the right side of the article? Lowest pressure[edit]

I found this one source that has Mawar's lowest pressure saying 897 hPa, but JMA listed it as 905. Which one is going to be listed? 71.51.64.132 (talk) 18:32, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I personally opt for going with JTWC's pressure, which is what is used in that reliable source media article. However, as discovered, there is some disagreement between editors on this topic. A discussion from 2006 come to a conclusion that JMA was more accurate and reliable than JTWC. However, since we now have reliable sources using JTWC's information & NOAA follows JTWC's information, I believe this article can override a discussion from over 16 years ago and use JTWC's information for the lowest pressure of Typhoon Mawar. To be fair, I'm not sure if a discussion from 2006 can actually dictate and basically overrule WP:RS, but hopefully a discussion now (in this section) can determine whether we can follow what media sources use or follow a consensus from 2006. Any decision to deviate from the established consensus that the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center pressure takes precedence must take place at WT:WPTC per WP:CONLEVEL. In the case of the JTWC, pressure is not an official output of theirs: it’s not included in their text products or ATCR and is not quality controlled. Until a few years ago, all satellite pressure estimates from the JTWC were junk: they were either essentially placeholder values for a particular wind speed or derived using some very outdated pressure-wind relationship.—Jasper Deng (talk) 20:08, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
RSMC/TCWCs possess the WMO-delegated authority on putting out TC data within their areas of responsibility (more information available in the Tropical Cyclone Operational Plans), so per WP:DUEWEIGHT, within the basins they are each responsible for, their estimates take precedence over any other agency. Since the year is well past 2000 and JTWC is no longer the RSMC for the Northwestern Pacific, their estimates are lower on the hierarchy than JMA. The only reason we feature JTWC across every (official) basin is because they issue advisories in every basin (for US government interests only; basin-wide interests fall to the responsibility of the RSMC), which gives them a unique position as a way to make inter-basin comparisons. Swimmer deaths[edit]
