Categories

[edit]

Hey. Can you please read category descriptions before you add them to articles. Please also read WP:BLPCAT and WP:CAT/R. The category "Irish Roman Catholics" is for people whose notability derives from their Catholicism. Not for people who just happen to be Roman Catholics, and not for elections or other events. Thanks. BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 19:53, 27 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Bastun the elections thing was a mistake I was tired and meant to add that to Christopher Palles' page as you saw later. I will quote what the relevant part of what you sent me " For a dead person, there must be verified reliable published sources that, by consensus, support the information and show that the description is appropriate." There are in fact reliable published sources taht show and support the information that Christopher Palles was Catholic but since it's not a huge deal I'll defer to you on that page. Anyway I apologize again for the elections one that was entirely a mistake that I had 0% intention of doing, sorry again it's late right now actually where I am as well.

No problem at all! On religious categories, I go by the category descriptions and both WP:CAT/R and WP:BLPCAT are both excellent rules to follow - being a member of a particular religion (or being an atheist) isn't enough to warrant inclusion in a religious (or atheist) category; the person's notability should derive from their religious activities too. So Daniel O'Connell, Richard Dawkins and Mother Teresa would all be correctly members of religious/atheist categories; film stars, sportspeople and politicians who just happen to be members of a particular religion, not so much. Happy editing! BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 13:36, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Please again note the contents of WP:CAT/R. Cheers, BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 12:51, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, nice to talk to you again I guess lol. Reading what you linked again I remember, but I'll copy and paste it here: "Categories regarding religious beliefs or lack of such beliefs of a living person should not be used unless the subject has publicly self-identified with the belief in question (see WP:BLPCAT), either through direct speech or through actions like serving in an official clerical position for the religion. For a dead person, there must be verified reliable published sources that, by consensus, support the information and show that the description is appropriate. Religion is not heritable. Never categorize by a religion of any parents or other ancestors."

So this entirely fits with adding him as a Catholic. I know you think that he doesn't qualify but it even mentions him being Catholic twice in his wikipedia article, three times if you count a note in the sources, once it being notable that he was denied being a full "Scholar of the House" specifically because he was Catholic and that Catholics weren't allowed to be Scholars of the House at the time. In addition in other articles it mentions that he fought important political battles for Civil Rights for Catholics more or less.

You're the only one on wikipedia I've ever met who has this opinion of being this stringent of who should be qualified to be put into a religious category. There are literally hundreds, thousands of people on wikipedia who are less notable for being of their religion who are still put into that category and it seems accepted and even encouraged to categorize them like this.

Hello, I'm Materialscientist. I noticed that you made a change to an article, Maud Cuney Hare, but you didn't provide a source. I’ve removed it for now, but if you’d like to include a citation to a reliable source and re-add it, please do so! If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. Materialscientist (talk) 10:48, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
