The railroad of the Cumberland Railway Company, herein called the Cumberland Railway, is a single-track road located in the States of Tennessee and Kentucky and extends from a connection with the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company at Hyde, Tenn., to Fonde, Ky. It is linked to the Southern by trackage over the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company from Hyde to Jellico, Tenn. The property embraces 10.860 miles of first main and 8.209 miles of yard and side tracks, a total of 19.069 miles of all tracks.

CORPORATE HISTORY

The Cumberland Railway was incorporated May 6, 1902, under the general laws of Tennessee.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

On March 23, 1905, the Cumberland Railway acquired by direct purchase from the Middlesboro Mineral Railway Company, about 2 miles of uncompleted road, extending from the Tennessee State line to a point near Fonde, Ky. This road was completed and opened for operation on November 24, 1905, on which date there was also opened for operation approximately 9 miles of road between Hyde, Tenn., and the Kentucky-Tennessee boundary, acquired by the Cumberland Railway through construction. Construction was performed under contract principally by the firm of W. J. Oliver and Company of Knoxville, Tenn. The records do not indicate that this firm was affiliated with the Cumberland Railway.
