European Comic Books and translations

Hi all, just added myself since I'm working on Enki Bilal and his Comic Books. But I'm having a problem with the translations. For the moment the bibliography list contains entries which links to the article of that book, work in progress, in the original language (French) and the translation in english next to it. And this doesn't seem right on the english wikipedia. Shouldn't it not be better if the Comic Books use the english title of the book and mention the original language on the book article itself? --Goanookie 14:59, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

Yeah - see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English). As far as I know, article titles and links for books that have been translated into English should only use the original language if English-speakers generally refer to the book by its original title (I can't think of an example in comics, but think of the movie La Dolce Vita, whose title is never translated, at least in the US). But don't make up translations for untranslated books. I'm not sure you should make links for all those untranslated books, either - single albums that have never appeared in English are unlikely to merit a whole article in an English-language encyclopedia - but that's a judgment call. (I would go ahead and move La Foire aux immortels to The Carnival of Immortals, etc., except the English titles have already been created as redirects so you'll have to get them deleted first... or you could copy and paste, but that would lose the edit history.) Lists of movies based on comics

Geez, while doing the Ghost World move, I realized we have both a List of movies based on comic books and a List of films based on comics. Any suggestions as to which one should stay? --DropDeadGorgias (talk) 21:15, May 18, 2005 (UTC)

Ack. They're slightly different, too, the former being specific to comic books whilst the latter covers strip as well. Just checked, that's also covered by List of movies based on comic strips. I'd say, on that basis, get rid of List of films based on comics. Hiding 21:32, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
Agreed, with the obvious proviso that any entries solely in films on comics get put into the relevant movies on pages. - SoM 21:44, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
Hmm, I thought i'd get off my ass and merge these lists, but I am finding a lot of entries films based on comics that were actually originally adapted from different media (for example, Casper, which was a tv-show, then a comic, then a movie). I think that the original criteria from the movies based on comic books list was better, where only original comic source material should be listed. What do you guys think? --DropDeadGorgias (talk) 15:24, Jun 13, 2005 (UTC)
Only movies based on comic books, I'd say. So comic books would have to be the source material, no? That would leave Casper out. I'd imagine that was included by mistake, as I never knew it was a series of animated shorts first. The only other ones that jump out at me are Bulletproof Monk and Virus, both of which I've never heard of as a comic or a film. Which doesn't mean they weren't, just exposes my ignorance. Hiding 15:36, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Bulletproof Monk was an American movie starring Chow Yun Fat, which flopped. According to IMDB's summary, it's based on a "very underground comic book", but the trivia section says that it was based on a graphic novel published by Image (since when is Image underground?) and written by Gotham Chopra, Deepak Chopra's son. DC Focus line

I read in an archive that you were looking for some one with a more extensive knowledge of the DC Focus books. I collected all of these series and can give more detailed info, but I'm very new to the editing side of this site, so if anyone could point me in the right direction and help out a beginner, it would be most appreciated. I see Hiding has already responded on your user talk page with some good how-to links. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask! Gwalla | Talk 20:49, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Amalgam

After searching, I see very little mention of Marvel vs DC, Amalgam or Superman/Spider-Man crossovers which are well-remembered and significant. Any chance of this being fixed? --Jamdav86 18:13, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The Marvel/DC crossovers in particular are not significant, but a page for Marvel vs. DC and for Amalgam could be made. --Pc13 19:11, 2005 Jun 16 (UTC)
The Amalgam page is present, it just isn't very good, i.e. it only briefly tells you about which characters were merged and nothing on the books they appeared in. --Jamdav86 19:02, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

WikiCities

I was thinking maybe we could make a wiki on WikiCities for comics. There is a lot of information that is deleted for non-notability on Wikipedia that would fit in a Comics wiki. It also bothers me that characters like The Flash, Green Lantern, and Robin (comics) have their articles for all characters that have that name rather than seperate articles for each different person. So basically we could have articles on Jay Garrick, Barry Allen, and Wally West instead of just The Flash. Anyone else think this is a good idea? 216.186.51.2 17:02, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

RE It also bothers... - Heck no. Clutters up the encyclopedia and is not needed. Most don't even know the aliases, and would want a complete history of the character, not the seperate identities. Redirects to specific points in the main articles would be in order here, but is probably covered by the technology. --Jamdav86 19:07, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Err, Jamdav, it sounds like you're in agreement with the anon editor. A lot of the info that would be considered cruft to the average wikipedia user would be useful on a comics-specific wikicity. I say it's a good idea, I'm surprised someone hasn't created one yet. If you do create one, please let us know the link, I'm sure there are editors here that would be interested. --DropDeadGorgias (talk) 20:49, Jun 20, 2005 (UTC)
This confusion may be because I don't understand what WikiCities is. I was disagreeing with the suggestion to seperate the Robin (comics) article into seperate articles such as Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake etc. --Jamdav86 16:37, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, I'd be against splitting articles in that way, but it'd definitely be a good idea for WikiCities. Hiding 17:22, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
We should start by putting it on the to-do list and making a sub-page for the proposal. We can use this page as a guideline for the proposal. KramarDanIkabu 03:59, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Secret War

Secret War (comics) add more info. - Brown Shoes22

I don't really know what to say, except never, EVER do that again. That was better off as a redlink than a complete absence of anything resembling a detail. If you want an article on something and can't do it yourself, request it here or at Wikipedia:Requested articles.
Can we speedy-delete this, or has anyone read enough of the mini to expand it into a decent stub at the very least? - SoM 29 June 2005 00:56 (UTC)
I agree. Brown Shoes, that's just rude. Don't create sub-stub articles and expect us to fix them into something usable. I'm speedying this article as it contains almost no information and isn't even phrased in sentences. If you want to help out with this wikiproject, do it constructively. --DropDeadGorgias (talk) June 29, 2005 04:46 (UTC)

Superman and Clark Kent

Is anyone else bothered by the separation of Superman and Clark Kent articles? I was just trying to do the supporting box for Lois Lane, and I wasn't sure if I should link to Clark Kent or Superman. In either case, I'm thinking the two articles should be merged. After all, Bruce Wayne is just a redirect to Batman at this point. It would be a really bad precedent to have separate articles for superheroes and their alternate identities. Please discuss further on Talk:Clark Kent. --DropDeadGorgias (talk) July 6, 2005 15:50 (UTC)
