Original – Supersonic shock waves produced by a T-38 aircraft during flight. Oblique shock waves are visible at the nose of the aircraft. The image was captured using background-oriented Schlieren photography in 2015.
Reason
Photo of supersonic shock waves of a full-scale aircraft in flight. This type of photography is a recent innovation (around 2010 to 2015), although the technique is old (Schlieren photography). The purpose of such photos is to aid design quieter supersonic aircraft. For details see [1], file description [2], and this source [3].
