The 2003 Kanagawa gubernatorial election was held on 13 April 2003 in order to elect the Governor of Kanagawa. Independent candidate and former member of House of Representatives Shigefumi Matsuzawa defeated Independent candidates Hajime Okamoto, Ichiro Asukata, Yoko Tajima, Seiko Miyako, Setsuko Yamamoto and Kenjiro Endo.[1]

General election

On election day, 13 April 2003, Independent nominee Shigefumi Matsuzawa won the election by a margin of 364,060 votes against his foremost opponent Independent candidate Ryoichi Takarada, thereby retaining Independent control over the office of Governor. Matsuzawa was sworn in as Governor on 23 April 2003.[2]
