Abd al-Aziz ibn Muhammad Suhayl al-Khatib al-Hasani (Arabic: عبد العزيز بن محمد سهيل الخطيب الحسني, romanized: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muḥammad Suhayl al-Khaṭīb al-Ḥasanī; born 1956), also known as Qutb al-Suriya (Arabic: قطب السوريا, romanized: Quṭb al-Sūriyā) or Qutb-i Sham (Urdu: قطب شام, romanized: Quṭb-i Shām), is a Syrian Islamic scholar of Sufism. He is considered a twenty-fifth generation descendent of Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani.
Biography[edit]
Abd al-Aziz al-Hasani was born in the neighborhood of Qaymariyya in Damascus, Syria in 1956.[1] He grew up under the tutelage of his father, the hadith scholar Muhammad Suhayl. Al-Hasani attended his meetings and lessons in the Umayyad Mosque and continued his lessons and took sciences along with his university studies in the Faculty of Arts.[2]
Abd al-Aziz's genealogy is as follows: Abd al-Aziz ibn Muhammad Suhayl ibn Abd al-Fattah ibn Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Rahim ibn Muhammad al-Khatib and the list goes on to Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, himself a descendent of Hasan ibn Ali.[1] Thus, Abd al-Aziz al-Hasani acquired the nisba al-Hasani.[1]
Abd al-Aziz has toured several countries, including Pakistan,[3] where he met with Ilyas Qadri in Karachi and praised him as "leader of the ahl al-sunnah" in Pakistan.[4] He declared "salvation of the ummah is with Sufism".[5]
