Algarrobo is a barrio in the municipality of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 15,764.[3][4][5]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, in 2010 the barrio had a total area of 5.70 square miles (14.8 km2) square miles, including 5.43 square miles (14.1 km2) square miles of land and 0.27 square miles (0.70 km2) square miles of water.

History

Algarrobo was in Spain's gazetteers[6] until Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish–American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1898 and became an unincorporated territory of the United States. In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census of Puerto Rico finding that the population of Algarrobo barrio was 877.[7]

Sectors and features

Barrios (which are, in contemporary times, roughly comparable to minor civil divisions)[15] in turn are further subdivided into smaller local populated place areas/units called sectores (sectors in English). The types of sectores may vary, from normally sector to urbanización to reparto to barriada to residencial, among others.[16][17][18]

Ciudad Real, Urb. Quintas de Tortuguero, Urb. Estancias de Tortuguero, Urb. Camino del Sol I & II, Sector Los Sostre, Reparto Alexandra, Camino Los Pizarro, haciendas Baudilio, Reparto Curiel, Sector La Quince, Reparto Providencia, Reparto Latania, Sector Villa Blanca, Sector Los Marrero, El Criollo, Barriada Collazo, El Verde, Urb. Monte Carlo, Cuesta Carrillo, Callejón Mr. Vélez, Reparto Sobrino 1, 2 & 3, Miss Kelly, Combate, Barrio Chino, Los Díaz, Los Pérez, Los Pachanga, Parcelas Márquez, Barrio Lindo, Urb. Arboleda, and Vega Baja Lakes.[19]

Part of the Laguna Tortuguero is located in Algarrobo.[20]
