Asterostomella is a genus of fungi in the Asterinaceae family. The relationship of this taxon to other taxa within the class is unknown (incertae sedis), and it has not yet been placed with certainty into any order.[1] They are leaf parasites.[2] Such as Asterostomella miliusaeA.K. Singh, Kamal & Shiv K. Singh (1982) is found on Miliusa tomentosa (Roxb.) Finet & Gagnep. plants in India as a type of 'black mildew'.[3]

It is found in South America (including Brazil and Argentina[4]), Africa and parts of Asia.[5] Including the Philippine Islands.[6][7]

Description

[edit]

The coelomycetous genus is characterised by brown, ovoid, aseptate pycnidia (fruiting body), sometimes with a non-pigmented band in the middle. The genus is considered as a member of Asterinaceae based on its scutellate (shaped like a shield or platter),[8] or orbicular,[2] conidiomata (blister fruiting body) with stellate dehiscence, which is similar to Asterina.[8]
