Cane Bay High School is a secondary school located in Summerville, South Carolina, United States. It is estimated to have an enrollment of >2,450 students as of the 2023-24 school year. The principal of the school is Dr. Glenda LeVine, who is accompanied by six assistant principals. The school offers many AP and Honors classes, accompanied several CTE programs. The school operates an Air Force Junior ROTC program, SC-20082, which is headed by Senior Aerospace Science Instructor Maj (Ret.) Christopher Perham, and assisted by Aerospace Science Instructor MSgt (Ret.) Paul Brown.

History

[edit]

The school opened in August 2008 to 9th and 10th graders, adding a grade each year. On August 17, 2010, the school opened its doors to all four grade levels for the first time.[2] During the fourth academic quarter of the 2019-20 school year, classes became virtual for the remainder of the school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since 2015, the exponential growth of large-scale developments in the surrounding Western Berkeley County (i.e. Eponymous Cane Bay Plantation, Nexton Village, Carnes Crossroads) have caused the student population to balloon from 1,750 students in 2016-17 to an estimated 2,450 students in the 2023-24 school year. Preceding Schools such as Cane Bay Middle and Cane Bay Elementary as well as other surrounding Schools have also experienced such population explosions. Due to these factors (alongside presumed improper public zoning), numerous local residents as well as local news stations and the county School Board itself have considered the Cane Bay school system to be overcrowded, citing increasing student-to-teacher ratios, attendance disruptions from excessive traffic/incapable transportation, and an inability to contain the student population at sanctioned events and everyday activities.
