Creating subcategories

[edit]

Currently there are more than 5000 individuals in this category, and I see that number as unmanageable due to having so much variety in coverage that the links may as well be random to a browsing user. As time passes the entries will only increase. I know there is a guideline about intersecting location with other traits, and that is the reason this category is so large. But it is my thought that this growing category of 5000 would be more useful to more people if it were subdivided somehow by some trait of the articles' subjects. Can anyone direct me to any past discussion about why Wikipedia has never done this in the past? I am curious if anyone has proposed a point at which the overcategorization guideline ought to flex and encourage more subcategories, somehow. Thoughts? To answer my own question, I intend to start moving some of these into subcategories by their occupation Category:People from New York City by occupation. Many of the entrants already in occupation subcategories use that category instead of category:People from New York City, so why not more? Blue Rasberry 02:23, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
