Dates | October 2024 – May 2025 (expected) |
← 2023–24 2025–26 → |
The 2024–25 Egyptian Premier League season will be the 66th edition of the Egyptian Premier League, the top professional league for association football clubs in the Egyptian football league system, since its establishment in 1948.
The season is expected to start in October 2024, and to conclude in May 2025.
Format[edit]
Unlike the previous editions of the league, the 2024–25 season will follow a format similar to the one used in the Belgian Pro League and in the 2023–24 season of the Egyptian Second Division A.[1] This change came to ensure that the league ends in May 2025, similar to other leagues, after the severe match schedule conflicts that the league witnessed since 2020 for various reasons that caused the postponement of many matches, resulting it to end on a different date every season.[2]
The league will consist of 18 teams in one group, and will be divided into two phases: In the first phase, teams will face each other only once in a single-leg tie, then the league will split into two groups. Phase two will consist of a championship group for teams finishing from first to eighth, and a relegation group for teams finishing from ninth to 18th in the first phase. The first-placed team in the championship group is crowned champions of the league, and qualify for the CAF Champions League alongside the runners-up, while the third-placed team qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup. The bottom three teams in the relegation round will be relegated to the Egyptian Second Division A.
Teams[edit]
A total of three teams were promoted to the league from the 2023–24 Egyptian Second Division A. The first team was champions Petrojet, who secured promotion back to the Egyptian Premier League after a four-year absence.[3] They were joined by Ghazl El Mahalla, who suffered an immediate return to the league after clinching the second promotion spot on the final day of the season.[4] Haras El Hodoud were the last team to earn promotion, who also suffered an immediate return to the league, after winning the promotion play-offs.[5]
