The bridge and border checkpoint on Indian side of Kashmir at Indo-Pak border, Kaman Post is located 118 km from Srinagar, India and 52 Km from Muzaffarabad, Pakistan [1]
History
[edit]Following Jehlum River, the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road was built on 1889 and extended to Srinagar in 1897. It was closed after the Indo-Pakistani war of 1947–1948. Thrown open again in the year 2005, closed again in 2019 after relation between two countries got strained due to abrogation of Article 370.[2] Kaman Post is the Indian border checkpoint between the two countries.[3]
Tourism
[edit]After the Bollywood film Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019), there has been a sudden surge in Indian tourists to walk on the 220-ft Kaman Bridge that connects Kashmir Valley to PoK, beside which a 50 ft long flag post hoisting Indian flag glorifies the Border checkpoint. [4] Indian Army has opened up the place with busts of war heroes, artificial bunker with toy guns and bullet proof vests for children and cafeteria.[5]64000 tourists visited the spot in year 2024.[6]
Legend
[edit]The legend says that Indian Army’s advance towards Tithwal was being halted at Trehgam Ridge during Indo-Pakistani war of 1947-1948. In order to capture the area till this post, the resulting battle was reportedly the hardest ever fought during the Jammu and Kashmir operations by Lieutenant Colonel Kaman Singh Pathania MVC, MiD (25 May 1913 – 15 July 1956), a decorated Indian Army Colonel on whose honor the Indian post on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road is named. The bridge on Jehlum River which lies in India is the only link to Pakistan is also named after him as Kaman Aman Setu.[7] As part of Operation Tithwal, Kaman who joined war theater in January 1948 commanded 3rd Garhwal Rifles from 18 May 1948 to 17 June 1948 led several missions on the Buni ridge ahead of Tithwal despite repeated counter attacks and having low ammunition secured the post with conspicuous courage.[8]
