Association football is the most popular sport in Costa Rica, and it has some well-known, and fierce derbies.

Clásico Nacional/El Clásico[edit]


The match played between Liga Deportiva Alajuelense and Deportivo Saprissa is known as the Clásico Nacional, or as El Clásico.[1]. Around 80% of Costa Rica's population is part of either team's fanbase[2].

Clásico del Buen Fútbol[edit]

The Clásico del Buen Fútbol is a football match played between Deportivo Saprissa and Club Sport Herediano[3].

Clásico Provincial[edit]

The Clásico Provincial is played between Liga Deportiva Alajuelense and Club Sport Herediano[4]. In recent years, the rivalry has peaked, as Herediano close in on titles against Alajuelense, with Heredia holding 29, and Alajuelense holding 30.

Clásico de la Metrópolis[edit]

The Clásico de la Metrópolis is disputed between Club Sport Cartaginés and Deportivo Saprissa, who both represent two of Costa Rica's largest cities within the Gran Área Metropolitana: Tibás and Cartago[5].

Clásico de la Pampa[edit]

The Clásico de la Pampa is disputed between the two largest clubs in Guanacaste: Municipal Liberia and A.D. Guanacasteca. Municipal Liberia represents the capital of the province of Guanacaste, while Guanacasteca is located in the smaller town of Nicoya, further south[6].

Clásico del Pacífico[edit]

The Clásico del Pacífico is played between Puntarenas F.C. and A.D. Guanacasteca, representatives of the two provinces bordering the Pacific Ocean in Costa Rica[7]
