LaserTank is a puzzle game written in C++ as an entry to KolibriOS 2015 New Year Game Development Contest. It was inspired by classic puzzle games, like Sokoban, but includes many new gameplay additions that make it more dynamic and various. It was developed in less than a month by a single developer and separated artist, and also gets support and updates some time after release.
LaserTank started development in the middle of December 2014, and was released on December 31, 2014, right by the contest deadline. Last update from developer was released on February 26, 2015, and included some bug fixes.
Gameplay[edit]
Gameplay of LaserTank in many ways is similar to other similar games of this genre, such as Sokoban, but also has significant differences. The player's task is to control the tank and move around the game field divided into squares in order to reach the end of the level. In addition to empty squares, where the player can move from a neighboring square, the field also contains a large number of obstacles and auxiliary objects:
- Walls that are impassable obstacles.
- Water, which cannot be moved unless you push a crate into the corresponding square.
- Boxes, which the player can move by "pushing" them in front of him with a tank.
In addition to these objects, usual for games of this genre, the game also has the mechanics of firing a laser from the tank, which interacts with the first object in a straight line in front of it, as well as objects that interact with the laser:
- Walls with an opening through which the laser beam can pass.
- Mirrors that rotate the laser beam 90 degrees.
- Enemies shooting at the player that can be destroyed by his laser.
These mechanics make the game unique in its own way, making it very different from classic puzzle games and bringing arcade or even action elements to the gameplay. )
Reception[edit]
The game was warmly received by players and the KolibriOS community, receiving many positive reviews and winning the game development contest for which it was originally released[1].
