Ladakh Union Territory has three universities, one medical college,[1] and at least two research institutes.
Universities
[edit]- Central Institute of Buddhist Studies at Leh, is a deemed university established in 1959.[2]
- Sindhu Central University at Khaltse, established in 2018, is a central university[3]
- University of Ladakh cluster university at Leh and Kargil, established in 2018,[4][5] is a state cluster university comprising the degree colleges of Leh, Kargil, Nubra Valley, Zanskar, Dras, and Khalatse.[6] Notable affiliated colleges are:
- Eliezer Joldan Memorial College Leh, Ladakh, established 1994.
- Government Degree College, Kargil[7]
Research institutes
[edit]- Central Arid Zone Research Institute, Leh (CAZRI Leh) under Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
- Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR) at Leh, established in 1962[8]is a defence laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)[9] which conducts research on cold arid agro-animal technologies.
- G. B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment Ladakh Regional Centre (GBPNIHE LRC) at Leh[10] researches cold desert biodiversity of Ladakh.[11]
- Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO) at Hanle, is a high-altitude astronomy station operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) as one of the world's highest located sites for optical, infrared and gamma-ray telescopes.[12]
- IISD Ladakh Sustainable Development Knowledge Centre (IISD LSDKC), conducts research on domestic and regional tourism in the Hindukush Himalayas. It is part of IISD (International Institute for Sustainable Development) which conducts research on United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).[13]
- Namgyal Institute For Research On Ladakhi Art and Culture (NIRLAC) at Leh, established in 1985 to research and preserve the culture of Ladakh.[14]
- National Institute Of Sowa Rigpa (NISR) at Leh, under Ministry of Ayush, conducts scientific research in the Sowa-Rigpa System of Traditional Tibetan Medicine.[15]
- Tribal Research Institute (TRI Ladakh) is the research body of the Ministry of Tribal affairs at state and union territory level.[16][17]

[edit]Tibetan Buddhism schools:
- All Ladakh Gonpa Association, numerous gompas run in-situ religious schools.
- Druk White Lotus School (Druk Padma Karpo School), at Shey in Ladakh district.
- Himalayan monasteries, includes some in Ladakh.
- Phuktal Monastic School, set up by the Phuktal Gompa to provide the students of the local Lungnak Valley in south-eastern Zanskar region.
- Tibetan Children's Villages (TCV Ladakh)[18] is an integrated community in exile for the care and education of orphans, destitutes and refugee children from Tibet with a network spread across India with over 12,000 children under its care.
Islamic madrasas:
- Islamia School, Kargil, at Kargil town, established in 1953.[19]
Other
