Born in Derbyshire in 1979, Pete Shuttleworth’s career in football, as a player, manager, scout, performance analyst and coach, spans more than 30 years, beginning when he was signed to Nottingham Forest FC Academy, in the heyday of manager BrianClough, playing for the U11 – 16 teams.

Early Football Career

Combining teaching with football management success

Shuttleworth’s first key footballing success came while he was a Physical Education and Sports Science undergraduate at Loughborough University Playing for Loughborough Students FC, he helped the team win a BUSA National Championship in 1999. It was also during his time at Loughborough University, that Shuttleworth discovered a love for coaching.

Qualifying as a secondary school teacher in 2002, Shuttleworth joined Tupton Hall School as a PE teacher. It was during his first two years of teaching that he successfully managed and coached the school’s U16s to the English Schools Football Association's National Schools Cup quarter-finals in 2004. The team included notable league players, including Lloyd Kerry, Nicky Law and Josh Law.

The competition brought Shuttleworth to the attention of non-league Shirebrook Town FC, Shuttleworth was asked to set up a third team in 2005 comprising players from Tupton Hall’s U18s as feeder team into Shirebrook’s first and second teams. After one season, he was asked to join the 1st team as assistant manager and subsequently was appointed Manager at the age of 27, retaining their North East Counties Premier League Status. He managed Shirebrook Town’s first team while also continuing to work full time as a teacher.

Following Shirebrook, Shuttleworth went on to become the assistant manager at Sheffield FC, the world’s oldest football club. He joined the club for the 2011/12 season seeing the club reach the play offs in the Unibond 1st Division after a 4th place finish.

Shuttleworth then moved as Assistant Manager to Worksop Town FC for the 2013/14 season and again reached the play offs after a 4th place finish. The team scored 121 goals and broke the league record. After the season, Shuttleworth decided to concentrate on his growing teaching career.

Team GB Triathlon success

Becoming a World Class Triathlete

In 2009 Shuttleworth began competing in Triathlon competitions, joining Belper TenTwenty Triathlon Club. His knowledge of sports science combined with his natural talent for the three disciplines, enabled him to improve his performance to such an extent that he went on to earn a Team GB place for the 2012 World Championships in Auckland. He went on to represent GB in two World Championships and three European Championships...

Achieving increasing success in Triathlon, alongside being the assistant manager of first Shirebrook Town then Worksop Town, Shuttleworth was forced to make a decision and choose between the two sports. Leaving football enabled him to train three times a day during the summer and dedicate more time over the winter to his sport.

The decision paid off with the then 36-year-old Shuttleworth going under two hours for the Olympic distance race at Bala in Wales. This earned him a second Team GB place to compete in the 2015 European Triathlon Championships in Geneva, where he achieved a new personal best and was ranked 6th for his age group in Europe

Professional Football Career

Making the move to full-time professional football

It was through Triathlon that Shuttleworth re-entered football as a scout. While racing against the Birmingham City Head of Recruitment he was persuaded him to become a part-time scout for the club, then under the management of Harry Redknapp. He remained in the part-time scout role for two years, when his passion for the club and his knowledge of sports performance prompted Birmingham’s then new Director of Football (Jeff Vetere) to approach Shuttleworth to head up the club’s Analysis Department full time. Shuttleworth then made the decision to leave teaching in 2017 after 16 years as a frontline teacher and latterly a member of the school’s senior leadership team as Head of ITT Training.

He remained at Birmingham City for three seasons, under managers Harry Redknapp, Lee Carsley, Steve Cotterill, Garry Monk, and Aitor Karanka in roles including opposition analyst, in-game analyst and coach.

Shuttleworth then left the club to become the first team analyst at Derby County, initially working under former manager Phillip Cocu. It was at Derby County that Shuttleworth was first introduced to the former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney. Rooney initially joined Derby County as interim player manager manager during Shuttleworth’s first season, taking over from Cocu. Shuttleworth’s work ethic and knowledge of the sport - both on and off the field – caught the attention of former England and Manchester United star Rooney who then increased Shuttleworth’s responsibilities when he became manager in 2020

Rooney subsequently brought Shuttleworth on board as Assistant Coach when he was appointed as Head Coach at the Major League Soccer Club DC United in 2022 .

Speaking of Shuttleworth to Derbyshire Live, Wayne Rooney said: “Pete worked with me at Derby during my time as manager there and has experience with analysis, coaching and recruitment. He’s someone I trust very much and he has a lot of qualities to help make the team better. It’s good to have him come in with me, but it’s also good for the team and the club to get someone of Pete’s ability to help us improve moving forward.”

Shuttleworth then accompanied Rooney to Birmingham City FC when he was appointed as manager in 2023. Unfortunately, Birmingham suffered a 3-0 defeat at Leeds on New Year's Day, and Rooney was sacked . Shuttleworth then stayed on for the remainder of the season, working under Tony Mowbray.

In May 2024, Rooney was appointed Head Coach of English second-tier Championship side Plymouth Argyle FC. Shortly after his appointment, Shuttleworth was named as Argyle’s new Assistant Head Coach. Announcing him as Argyle’s new Assistant Head Coach, Rooney said of Shuttleworth: “He is an excellent coach with footballing ideals that match mine and Argyle’s but is also an outstanding motivator and has a real knowledge of tactical and performance analysis. Ultimately, he is a great person who holds all the values that the football club and I look for and he will complement our current group of coaching staff perfectly.”

Shuttleworth’s coaching talents have come to the attention of national teams. In 2024 he formed part of Republic of Ireland's national football team's Interim Head Coach John O'Shea’s backroom staff for their games against Hungary (4 June) and Portugal (11 June), and continued in this role for the National League games against England and Greece in September 2024.
