Sanjeev Ranjan (born 21 January 1963) is an Indian civil servant serving as the current Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India since 2020.[1] He is a 1985 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Tripura cadre.[2] Prior to his current position, he served as Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Chairman of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) as well as the Chief Secretary of Tripura.[2][3][4][5]
Career
[edit]Ranjan has served in various positions in the Government of India and Government of Tripura, including as the Secretary of MoRTH, Chairman of NHAI, Chief Secretary of Tripura, Additional Secretary & Financial Adviser in the MoRTH, Shipping, and Tourism, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defense, Resident Commissioner of Tripura, Director in the Ministry of Heavy Industries, and district magistrate and collector of North Tripura district in the Tripura government.[2][3][4][5][6] He has also served on the Board of a number of companies in the infrastructure, power and tourism sectors including NHIDCL, SCI, ITDC, OTPC, NEEPCO and National Dairy Development Board.[7][8][9][10]
Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Chairman, National Highways Authority of India
[edit]During Ranjan's tenure the Ministry undertook large private public infrastructure projects, adopted infrastructure investment trusts (InvITs) and toll operate and transfer (ToT) for financing, implemented FASTag for cash less toll collection and promoted road safety through amendments in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.[11]
Chief Secretary of Tripura
[edit]Ranjan was appointed as the 23rd Chief Secretary of the Government of Tripura.[5] Ranjan demitted the office of chief secretary when he was appointed as a Secretary in the Government of India.
Ministry of Defense
[edit]Ranjan also worked on national security infrastructure planning as Joint Secretary, Ministry of Defense and Secretary, Border Roads Development Board.[2]
Ministry of Heavy Industries
[edit]As Director, Ministry of Heavy Industries, Ranjan was involved in the formulation of the “National Automobile Policy” and vision for “Making India into a Global Automotive Hub”.[11][2]
Education
[edit]Ranjan, a National Talent Search Scholar, received his B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur, MBA from Faculty of Management Studies and M.Phil. in Economic Development from the University of Glasgow. Ranjan completed his PhD on the impact of information technology use on efficiency in public sector enterprises at IIT Delhi. He also received a degree in Masters in Public Management at the National University of Singapore and was a Lee Kuan Yew Fellow at Harvard University. He is an alumnus of the National Defence College, New Delhi.[2][11]
