Draft:Valdemar Cardoso da Rocha Jr.

  • Comment: If you keep submitting and do not repair the issues the draft will probably be rejected without an option to resubmit. Ldm1954 (talk) 01:42, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
  • Comment: Seven out of the ten paragraphs are completely unreferenced (and two of the four sources only reference the subject's own works). This is unacceptable in an article on a living person (WP:BLP). Pretty much every material statement, and certainly anything potentially contentious as well as all private personal details must be clearly supported by immediate inline citations to reliable published sources, or else removed. Please note, this is a hard requirement, not an optional extra. DoubleGrazing (talk) 09:27, 19 September 2024 (UTC)

Valdemar Cardoso da Rocha Jr. (Born: August 27, 1947, Jaboatão, Pernambuco, Brazil) ) is former chair of the Department of Electronics and Systems.[1] at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), Brazil, his work focuses on coding theory, information theory and cryptography.

Valdemar Cardoso da Rocha Jr.

Early life and education

[edit]

Dr. da Rocha received the B.S. (1970) in electrical and electronics engineering from Escola Politécnica, Recife, Brazil. He was granted a Brazilian Ministry of Education Fellowship and began graduate studies in 1972 at the University of Kent, where he concentrated on coding theory and received his Ph.D. in 1976 with the thesis Versatile Error Control Coding Systems[2]

Academic career

[edit]

In 1976, Dr. da Rocha joined the faculty at UFPE and was instrumental in founding the university's Electrical Engineering Postgraduate Program and remained a Professor of Telecommunications since 1993 until his retirement in 2022.[1]

Research and contributions

[edit]

Dr. da Rocha has made contributions to telecommunications, particularly in coding theory, cryptography, and wireless communication systems. He has published over 100 research papers.[3][4][5][6][7], both in journals and at international conferences[8][9][10]. His work has been widely cited over the years, with a consistent citation index that reflects his significant impact on telecommunications[4]

In addition to his research, Dr. da Rocha has served his technical community in various instances, for example, he created the IEEE Information Theory Chapter - Brazil[9] and was its first president. He was a member of the IEEE Information Theory Society Board of Governors[9], has organized and chaired international conferences [10] [11] and has acted as a consultant to the Brazilian Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Defense.

Professional memberships and honors

[edit]

Dr. da Rocha is a founding member and former president of the Brazilian Telecommunications Society which recognized his contributions to the area of telecommunications by electing him an Emeritus Member (2008)[12]. He is also a Life Senior Member (2012) of the IEEE Communications Society and the IEEE Information Theory Society[13], and was elected a Fellow (1992) of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.

He has been a member of prestigious committees such as the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal Committee and has held visiting professor positions at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology-Zürich (ETHZ), the University of Leeds, and Lancaster University.

Selected publications

[edit]

Awards and Recognition

[edit]

Throughout his career, Dr. da Rocha has received numerous awards[12] and honors for his contributions to telecommunications and electrical engineering. His work has had a lasting impact on both academic research and industry practices in Brazil and internationally.[16]
