Comments[edit]

Notes:

  • Use of the terms Opex and Capex, because of their specific implications to taxes and financial compliance, might be examined. Use of terms like “consumption-based services” or “variable cost model” or even just “on-demand services” could convey the message without the financial language. I know this is a useful shorthand in many cases, but there is case law finding that cloud providers aren’t tax or financial advisors and can’t use this language, so we might take the same caution.
  • In the Origin section I didn’t get any more detail from J.R. than what’s there in the book. The last sentence about Spotify will probably need a citation to remain in place.
  • AWS now also uses the word FinOps as synonymous with CFM, there are several citations that could be used from recent announcements, as does Microsoft.
  • This is more of a personal like to see… FinOps is the discipline, the FinOps Foundation is an organization. the article refers to the Foundation several places but it might be nice to have a section on “the FinOps Foundation” that captures
    • That it’s a Project of the Linux Foundation
    • Member-based non-profit trade association
    • Created on 2/24/19
    • First (sponsoring) Member was CloudHealth
    • really does three things:
      • Creates community - with events like FinOps X, the first of which was in June 2022 in Austin TX
      • Advance Careers - through certifications (already in there) internships, scholarship, etc.
      • Documents best practices - FinOps Framework (also already there) could be described
      • Sponsor of FOCUS, which I hope will one day get its own page too.
