Summary

Author
Willem Van de Velde, the Elder
Description
English: Removing wounded in the allied fleet after the first battle of Schoonevelt 31? May - 10 June 1673

In the centre, a port bow view of a three-decker with a dark flag at the main, probably Spragge in the ‘Royal Prince’; her fore course and fore and main topsails are shaking but her mizzen and mizzen topsail are filled. Several boats on her quarter. Astern of her a two-decker that has lost her main topmast (? Cap st… / vande quest… / op dese schip), possible Strickland in the ‘Mary’ taking on board the wounded from the ‘Royal Prince’.

There are other drawings showing the wounded being removed in the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam (98) and in the Victoria & Albert Museum (D.668-9).

This drawing is an unsigned pencil and wash drawing by the Elder. It has been rubbed on the back, with an offset probably having been taken from it.
