Image title | The Old Jail Art Center in Albany, Texas, seat of Shackelford County. The building, the town's first permanent jail, was erected in 1877. Initials on many of the native limestone blocks show masons' claims for work. A plaque on the building notes that an early prisoner, John Selman, later killed notorious gunman John Wesley Hardin in El Paso. The building was superseded by a new jail in 1929 and became a vault for the town's archives, then saved from demolition in 1940 by Albany native and playwright Robert Nail, who for years used it as his writing studio. In 1980, gifts from private collectors enabled the building to open as an art center. It then expanded to more than 14,000 square feet, holding collections of many genres. |
