[edit]- 1883 – Construction on the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad reaches Salt Lake City, Utah.[1]
- 1886 – Executives from several railroad companies operating in the southern United States meet and agree to all regauge their railroads to standard gauge, 4 ft 8+1⁄2 in (1,435 mm), by June 1.[1]
- 1900 – The Cape Breton Electric Tramway and Power Company in Nova Scotia, Canada, is incorporated.[2]
- 1900 – The Newark, Somerset and Straitsville Railroad is reorganized as the Ohio Midland Railroad.[3]
20th century
[edit]- 1908 – Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway purchases the Columbia Railway and Navigation Company.[1]
- 1930 – Chesapeake and Ohio Railway inaugurates The Sportsman passenger service.[1]
- 1935 – The first section of the Itō Line, connecting Atami and Ajiro in Japan, is opened.
- 1954 – The first subway system in Canada, the Yonge Subway operated by Toronto Transit Commission, opens.[4][5]
- 1972 – The Milwaukee Road discontinues its Limburger Special passenger service to New Glarus, Wisconsin.[6]
- 1973 – Toronto's Yonge Subway is extended to York Mills Station.[5]
21st century
[edit]- 2004 – High speed train service is inaugurated in Korea between Seoul and Daegu.
- 2005 – Kansas City Southern Railway leases its Bay Springs branch line between Newton and Bay Springs, Mississippi to Watco; the line will be the basis of the new Mississippi Southern Railroad.
- 2005 – Bombardier is awarded a contract to build 10 new bilevel commuter coaches for GO Transit; the contract is valued at $21 million.
- 2008 – Yokohama Municipal Subway's Green Line is opened for regular operations.
