Adding professional sports league scores

[edit]

It has recently come under my attention that this has been decided, however I would like to re-open the issue. I believe that this is likely one of the reasons contributing to this page not being updated very much any more. I think we should change our policy. Anyone want to comment? -- Earl Andrew - talk 05:15, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I believe Current events/Sports (section) is an integral part of the Wikipedia and must be updated in heavy load. And Pro-Sports (From the USA or else) are equally important for all over the world... But I think not all Regular Season games are have needed on main page... Rivalry games and play-offs and bowls maybe enough. (For example in La Liga Barcelona - Real Madrid is important for main page but Barcelona - Osasuna is not as Wikipedia Standarts.)Ozzymanborn (talk) 11:37, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Ozzymanborn for the most part, though I would replace "rivalry games" with "regular season games of significance", meaning those with playoff implications or where significant events (i.e., new records, Malice at the Palace, etc.) occurred. I wouldn't, for instance, include the score of a September Red Sox-Yankees game if both (for some reason) were way out of postseason contention. 199.20.68.40 (talk) 16:18, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portaal:In_het_nieuws/Sport is better example for current status of Current events/Sports (section) Ozzymanborn (talk) 09:21, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please Start updating this page after 1 May 2013. This page Must not be dead 80.82.69.150 (talk) 12:15, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notification

[edit]

I am wondering whether it is time to remove the "Sports events" link from the top of Portal:Current events. Editors watching this page may like to comment at Portal talk:Current events#Worldwide current events/Sports events. -- John of Reading (talk) 13:00, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

MFD?

[edit]

Thanks to the successful campaign to remove North American sports scores, this page has been dead. No updates for the whole month of June and probably July too. Time for an MFD? –HTD 05:23, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

...or at least marked as {{historical}} and unlinked from Portal:Current events. But the sidebar is still being updated, so it would be a shame to lose that. How about clearing the "May" details and widening the sidebar? -- John of Reading (talk) 07:35, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
...or just make the sidebar the "main bar"??? –HTD 09:23, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Portal:Current events/Sports/Sandbox ? -- John of Reading (talk) 11:37, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah like that. –HTD 12:52, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I support that too. Pelmeen10 (talk) 10:00, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've posted at Portal talk:Current events, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sports, and User talk:Treki (the editor who maintains the sidebar). If there are no objections by, say, Friday, I plan to implement this new design. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:33, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It should be deleted per WP:ROUTINE and WP:NOTNEWSPAPER. This is marked as a Portal, but it is not being used as a Portal. It is not even vaguely close to a Portal. This is being used as a repository of sports results and at the very least this belongs in Wikinews, NOT Wikipedia. If this is not addressed then you are not really being honest about a review of this portal.
I refer you to Wikipedia:Portal and its companion guidelines at Wikipedia:Portal guidelines. --Falcadore (talk) 04:01, 7 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There are no sports results at Portal:Current events/Sports/Sidebar or in the proposed reformatted version, Portal:Current events/Sports/Sandbox. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:07, 7 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Problem I notice here is that it is forecasting near future events. Wikipedia is not a directory of forthcoming events. Also events occurring in the next two days is not by any description current events. What current events/sports should do is be a repository of portalised links to Wikipedia articles describing events as they occur or linking to Wikinews articles. Have a look at Portal:Current events, there's your model. When the date is July 7 there should be nothing on the page about what is happenning on July 8 or July 9. This has been a long-running understanding failure of editors on this page. --Falcadore (talk) 08:14, 7 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is a fundamental misunderstanding of WP:CRYSTAL and WP:DIRECTORY, I should say. The MLB games two days from now are not "unverifiable speculation", nor is the list of upcoming elections and trials at P:CE; it is also not a directory of Wikinews links as is P:CE (there aren't Wikinews links there now) but blurbs with links to external websites as references (which is the textbook definition of WP:DIRECTORY) but I don't see you raising a stink there. This portal was just like P:CE without specific subpages for individual days.
Problem here is once the "we don't like US sports scores" people finally succeeded in removing US sports scores, they failed to maintain this portal and is now a shadow of its former self. Better just delete this because of that, unless those same people somehow are able to make this portal good enough again. –HTD 11:02, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sport is different thing. Ongoing events term includes continuous sports events. As you see current events (news) sidebar there is Great Recession, European sovereign-debt crisis, Greek economic crisis & Cypriot financial crisis tabs and these are not everyday events but in sport, every ongoing thing is important. (When July 8 you need to control July 9 as it's just one day away. And also If F1 World Championships Continues you need to follow From March to November as it ongoing thing) Yes, Wikipedia is not a newspaper but Sidebar is really helpful tool and as it help me as a sport writer. (I even check it for any event which i can follow) Also Current Events different meaning as a portal and different to Portal:Sports And It Must be stay as it before... Including US Sports Scores or just like http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portaal:In_het_nieuws/Sport 78.162.83.130 (talk) 06:36, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That is complete rubbish. All life is ongoing, most events connect to other events and sport is not remotely different from other forms of activity in this regard. Whether a tool is helpful or not is irrelevant next to the pupose of a portal.
In the past this portal has been used primarily as a guide to upcoming events and secondly for routine reporting of results. Repeating this must be avoided.
From Wikipedia:Portal guidelines#What content to include:
Introduction – A short summary of the topic. If possible, this should contain an attractive image emblematic of the topic.Red XN
Categories – Links to the most important categories related to the topic.Red XN
Subportals or Related Portals (if there are any) – Some portals have these appear near the top, just below the "Introduction" (e.g. Arts or Technology). Others have them appear near the bottom (e.g., Biology or Literature). This section is not required if a topic-specific browsebar is used (e.g., Religion).Green tickY
Topics – Links to the most important articles related to the topic.
The guideline then goes on to list what Portal should do. --Falcadore (talk) 11:26, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can an editor decide where this content is going? There was a consensus to merge this article to a separate tab on Portal:Current events, but no name for the destination was proposed. Once it has been decided, could someone revise the merge tag on this article and add one to the appropriate target per instructions at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Administrator instructions? I, JethroBT drop me a line 20:55, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest keeping current page. Page history can be seen then. I don't see the point of merging, but OK there was a debate. Pelmeen10 (talk) 04:41, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think the histories should be kept separate: move Portal:Current events/Sports to Portal:Current events/Sports/News archive, or similar, and mark it {{Historical}}, and then move Portal:Current events/Sports/Sidebar to Portal:Current events/Sports and reformat it to fill the page. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:39, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Nickst: After this redirection there is no longer any way for readers to get to the Portal:Current events/Sports/Sidebar, and the "Sports events" link at the top of Portal:Current events now does nothing. Where are you planning to display the sidebar? -- John of Reading (talk) 21:53, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Should not go anywhere. This portal should never have existed. It was neither a portal in form, nor acceptable Wikipedia encyclopedic content. --Falcadore (talk) 21:56, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Falcadore: The MFD was closed as "merge" not "delete". The nominator and all the !voters wanted to retain the sidebar somewhere. -- John of Reading (talk) 22:07, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've had another go at reformatting the sidebar to fill the whole page, at User:John of Reading/Sandbox. Don't look too hard at the detail. -- John of Reading (talk) 22:38, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(More) I have made bold edits to Portal:Current events/Sports and Portal:Current events/Sports/Sidebar, so that the sidebar now fills the page. All comments welcome. Is that enough to remove the {{mfd-mergeto}} notice? -- John of Reading (talk) 08:33, 7 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@I JethroBT: Deafening silence here! -- John of Reading (talk) 22:00, 17 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like a decision to me. I, JethroBT drop me a line 22:25, 17 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed the {{mfd-mergeto}} notice. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:34, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The "Portal:Current events/Sports/Sidebar" is not sidebar anymore, so it has a wrong name. Rename or make all those changes in this page? Pelmeen10 (talk) 03:21, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The name isn't very visible to readers, so I don't see any need to change it. But of the two options you mention, I'd prefer to see it renamed, so that the sidebar's long history is kept in one place. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:53, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
We can actually redirect that page to here (this needs to be temporarily deleted). But future of this page seems dark anyway. Pelmeen10 (talk) 02:28, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Current sporting seasons

[edit]

In the Current sporting seasons section, is the intent to list only active (ongoing) seasons, or more broadly list "timely" seasons? I ask because some listed seasons, such as European League of Football and German Football League, have already ended. I wanted to check before clearing such entries. Baseball

[edit]

Why doesn't baseball deserve to be part of the Ongoing events and Current sporting seasons sections? DJay351 (talk) 15:28, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly because the editors are not familiar with all the sports that happen around the world, and it's quite impossible (probably unnecessary too) to cover it all. What's happening in baseball? By checking Category:Current baseball seasons it seems only Australian league is ongoing and due to end today. Didn't you know that everybody (even you) can add information to Wikipedia?
