President University (Indonesian: Universitas Presiden) (abbreviated as PresUniv) is a private university located in the Jababeka Industrial Estate in Cikarang. The establishment of President University is closely linked to the operation of a campus in Cikarang named 'Sekolah Tinggi Teknik Cikarang' in 2001. As a university, President University officially began its operations on April 16, 2004, through Ministerial Decree 54/D/0/2004.[1]

History

President University was conceptualized by Dr. (HC) Setyono Djuandi Darmono during his tenure as President Director of PT Jababeka Tbk. and Prof. Donald W. Watts, the President of Bond University (Queensland) and Deputy Advisor of Curtin University in Western Australia. Several prominent figures in Indonesia were also involved in refining the concept of President University, such as Prof. Dr. Juwono Sudarsono (an academic who served as Minister of Environment, Minister of Education and Culture, and Minister of Defense), legal expert Prof. Dr. Charles Himawan, SH, LLM, Ir. Laksamana Sukardi (Minister of State for Investment and Empowerment of SOEs (1999-2001) and Minister of SOEs (2001-2004), Drs. Utomo Josodirjo (a figure in Indonesian Accounting), and national entrepreneur Surjanto Sosrodjojo.[2]

International accreditation

President University has obtained international accreditation through its Faculty of Computer Science. After undergoing several stages, President University obtained international accreditation from the Indonesian Accreditation Board for Engineering Education (IABEE) institution for the Information System program on February 22, 2023, that an independent accreditation body that has become a Provisional Signatory member of the Washington Accord (WA). The Washington Accord is an international cooperation agreement in the engineering field program accreditation under the International Engineering Alliance (IAE).

On September 30, 2021, the Faculty of Business at President University became a member of the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).[3] According to ACBSP data on its official website, there only three universities in Indonesia that are members of ACBSP: Atma Jaya University Yogyakarta, Parahyangan Catholic University Bandung, and President University Cikarang. Maria Jacinta Arquisola, BA, MHRM, Ph.D., as the Dean of the Faculty of Business, along with two colleagues, Claudia Genoveva as the Head of the Management Study Program and Bintang Rumapea, represent President University in ACBSP membership. By 2023, the Faculty of Business at President University has been accredited A1 by ACBSP.[4]

National accreditation

President University obtained an "A" accreditation from BAN-PT on December 19, 2018, through Decree No. 411/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/PT/XII/2018.[5] In 2023, accreditation "A" of President University was extended until December 20, 2028. Program outside the main campus

The Peputra Manggala Nusantara Foundation and the President University Education Foundation have joined forces to establish an Off-Campus Study Program Campus (PSDKU) at President University in Pekanbaru. The inauguration of the construction of the prospective campus will be held at Plaza The Central Building, 2nd floor, Ahmad Yani Street No.42 A, on Friday, November 3, 2023. The Inauguration Ceremony of the President University PSDKU will be graced by the esteemed presence of the Founder of President University, Dr. (HC) Setyono Djuandi Darmono, the Chairman of the President University Foundation, Prof. Dr. Ir. Budi Susilo Soepandi, DEA, the Chairman of the Peputra Manggala Nusantara Foundation, Sabrina Putri Salim, the Patrons of the Peputra Manggala Nusantara Foundation, Sarkawi Lim and Mariyana, and the Head of LLDIKTI X, Afdalisma SH MPD. The PSDKU of President University in Pekanbaru will offer 2 majors, namely Information Technology and Information Systems. New student admissions are scheduled to commence in 2024/2025.[6]

ICBFE

The International Conference on Family Business and Entrepreneurship (ICFBE) is an event organized by the President University Business School. Since its inception in 2017, ICFBE has been a platform for global discussions on family businesses and entrepreneurship. The most recent conference, held from November 30 to December 1, 2023, in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, was a truly international affair, with participants and speakers from various countries including the United States, Australia, Hungary, India, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Slovenia, and Taiwan. ICFBE 2023 had the theme "Moving Forward, Moving Upward: Resilience and Innovation for Family Business and SMEs," reflecting the conference's focus on the challenges and opportunities facing family businesses and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in today's dynamic global economy. The opening ceremony of ICFBE 2023 was graced by esteemed personalities such as Ayman El Tarabhishy (Deputy State Secretary of Sarawak, Malaysia, for Economic Planning and Development), Prof. Ki-chan Kim (International Rector of President University), Prof. Chairy (Rector of President University), Prof. Datuk Mohamad Kadim (Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak), Datuk Muhammad Abdullah bin Haji Zaide (President and CEO of the International Council for Small Business (ICSB)), and Kyoo-il Jo (Mayor of Jinju, South Korea). The collaboration between President University, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, and Tanjungpura University, Pontianak, West Kalimantan, showcased the conference's commitment to fostering international partnerships and knowledge exchange in the field of family business and entrepreneurship.[7]

Studies abroad

The 2022 Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) program, organized by the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research and Technology, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbud Ristek), aims to provide opportunities for Indonesian students to pursue educational activities abroad. As part of this program, students from President University, including Alexandra Evelyne and Nadya from the Management Study Program, have been able to study internationally. Alexandra Evelyne is currently enrolled at University College London in the United Kingdom, while Nadya has been accepted at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST). In addition, two alumni of President University, Muhamad Rizki Nugraha Darma Nagara (Deris) and Denisa Amelia Kawuryan, who graduated from the International Relations Study Program in 2015, have also continued their studies abroad. Both alumni received scholarships through the Education Fund Management Institute (LPDP) scholarship program under the Ministry of Finance (Kemenkeu). Muhamad Rizki Nugraha Darma Nagara is pursuing postgraduate studies (S2) in the Master of Public Administration program at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), Columbia University in the United States, while Denisa Amelia Kawuryan is enrolled in a master's program in the Master of Science in Sustainable Development at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom.

International partnerships

1. Timor Leste

President University has established a collaboration with the Government of Timor Leste. This was demonstrated by the visit of the Education Attaché of Timor Leste to Indonesia, Jaime Andre Simoes, who toured the dormitories of President University on December 8, 2023. He was accompanied by active students from Timor Leste, who also serve as the Chairperson of the President University Timorese Student Association (PUTSA). Additionally, President University has partnered with the Fundo De Desenvolvimento Do Capital Humano (FDCH) or Human Capital Development Fund of Timor Leste to offer scholarships to young individuals in Timor Leste.[8]

2. The Government of Jinju City

President University (Presuniv) has established a collaboration with the Jinju City Government in South Korea. This collaboration is formalized by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Rector of President University, Prof. Chairy, and the Mayor of Jinju, Kyoo-il Jo. To mark this collaboration, a seminar titled "Sharing Insights on Korean Youth Entrepreneurship and Humane Entrepreneurship" was held on Monday, November 28, 2023, at the Charles Himawan Auditorium in Building A on the President University campus at Jababeka Education Park, Cikarang, Bekasi. The seminar featured two international speakers, Dr. Ayman El Tarabishy, President & CEO of the International Council of Small Business (ICSB), and Kyoo-il Jo, the Mayor of Jinju, South Korea.[9]

3. K-Food Institute

President University (Presuniv) and Sungshin Women's University of South Korea inaugurated the K-Food Institute on Monday, March 13, 2023. The inauguration was held at the SetSail BizAccel–President University Business Accelerator, Jababeka industrial zone Cikarang. The inauguration of the K-Food Institute was attended by the International Chancellor of President University, Prof. Ki-Chan Kim, the President of Sungshin Women's University, Prof. Seong Keun Yi, and the President of Presuniv, Prof. Chairy.[10]

Foreign students

According to data from the izinbelajar.kemendikbud.go.id website, 6.9 percent of foreign undergraduate students selected President University in 2017. This percentage rose to 7.2 percent in 2018 and further increased to 8.3 percent in 2019. However, there was a noticeable drop in 2020, with no international students enrolling in undergraduate programs in Indonesia. In 2021, a total of 3,896 international students were studying in Indonesia, among whom 5.3 percent opted to continue their studies at President University. The trend reversed in 2022, with 8.8 percent of international students choosing to study at President University, as per data from the Institutional Directorate.[11]

Scholarship

The registration process for student recruitment at President University is known as a placement test. This selection process uses English as the primary language. The materials tested in the student recruitment at President University include English, Academic Potential Test (TPA), and Mathematics (specifically for the Faculty of Engineering). President University offers achievement pathways and provides scholarships worth 65 billion rupiah to 1,400 high school graduates every year.

1. Jababeka Scholarship

The Jababeka Scholarship is available for prospective and current students at President University. It provides tuition fee subsidies for up to ten semesters until graduation with a Bachelor's degree (S-1), excluding the eleven-semester Architecture Study Program. The scholarship is designed to help students graduate on time, typically within three years and four months, or in three years with the Independent Campus Curriculum. The scholarship is not affected by fluctuations in GPA, except for Rank-1 Scholarship recipients. There are five categories of scholarship acquisition: Rank-1 (100% subsidy), Rank-2 (75% subsidy), Rank-3 (70% subsidy), Rank-4 (60% subsidy), and Rank-5 (50% subsidy).[12]

2. Astra Scholarship

The Astra Scholarship is a program organized by PT. Astra International Tbk. To qualify for the program, students need to pass the selection for the Independent Campus Learning (MBKM) program organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbud Ristek).[13]

3. Hyundai Scholarship

The Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Scholarship is a program offered to students of President University through a collaboration with Hyundai Motor. It is designed to support Indonesian students with exceptional abilities in business, engineering, computing, arts, and humanities to pursue their studies at prestigious Korean universities. The scholarship covers full tuition, living expenses, and completion fees for 3-5 students for 2 semesters at renowned Korean institutions such as Seoul National University, Korea University, Yonsei University, and Hanyang University.[14]

4. Papuan Maga Education Foundation

The Maga Edukasi Papua Foundation (YMEP) collaborates with President University in the education sector, especially to improve Papuan Human Resources (HR) in medical and technical science. This collaboration includes scholarship assistance for medical education and technical education intended for the young generation of Papua through YMEP. The MoU between YMEP and President University was signed on October 10, 2023, in Jakarta.[15]

5. Beasiswa Online Scholarship Competition

The Online Scholarship Competition (OSC) is the first online scholarship competition in Indonesia, held since 2015 by the Surya Edukasi Bangsa Foundation and the news & video site Medcom.id. OSC aims to provide opportunities for Indonesian students to pursue Bachelor's and Master's degrees at universities throughout Indonesia. President University participates in the Online Scholarship Competition (OSC), especially in several faculties. These include the Faculty of Humanities with the Primary School Teacher Education (PGSD) study program, and the Faculty of Engineering with the Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering study programs. President University received several achievements in the Online Scholarship Competition (OSC), such as the Honorable Mention Award in Online Distancing Model United Nations (MUN), the Silver medal of the 2019 Student Digital Innovation Competition (LIDM), the Indonesian Debating Competition at Udayana University, Bali, the Best Delegate in the United Nations (UN) Environmental Program Council, and the winner in the Multi Talent Show Model Star 2019.[16]

6. Sony Music Group Global (SMG) Scholarship

The Sony Music Group Global Scholars is a full scholarship program sponsored by Sony Music Group (SMG) and managed by the Institute of International Education (IIE). This program aims to support and guide young talents in pursuing undergraduate studies related to the music business and provides valuable opportunities to learn and collaborate with global music industry leaders.[17]

Student affairs

Student organizations at President University have their leadership structure, and constitution and can receive financial support from the institution, possibly through student activity fees. The Student Affairs Bureau of President University is responsible for fostering student organizations at President University.[18] The student organizations consist of:

  • President University Student Council (PUSC),
  • President University Student Union (PUSU),
  • President University Student Board (PUSB),
  • President University Faculty Association (PUFA),
  • President University Major Association (PUMA).

Achievement

Here is a list of some of the President University Student achievements:

  • The Dexter Team from the President University Management Study Program secured second place in the 2021 HSBC Business Case Competition.[19]
  • Students from the President University International Relations program achieved 1st Runner-Up in the Asian Youth Speech Contest in Thailand. They were also named Champions of the Naradipta EO Speech Competition at Yogyakarta State University.[20]
  • The Mechanical Engineering students from President University passed the 2021 Indonesian Student Entrepreneurship Program (PKMI) Selection in the Indonesian Student Entrepreneurship Activities (KBMI) category.[21]
  • A Law student was selected as a finalist for the West Java Language Ambassador 2021.
  • Business Administration students represented Banten Province in the Triathlon sport at PON XX Papua 2021 and participated in the Aquathlon event, organized by the Indonesian Banten Triathlon Federation.[22]
  • The Industrial Engineering student team secured First Place in the International Competition, Industrial Engineering Scientific Competition (IESC) 2021.[23]
  • Another team from the Mechanical Engineering program won first place in the 2021 Otodesign National CAD design competition at the Jember State Polytechnic.
  • Students from the Management study program received the XL Future Leaders (XLFL) scholarship.
  • Information Systems students achieved runner-up position at the 2022 ASEAN Indonesia Entrepreneurship World Cup (EWC).[24]
  • International Relations students achieved remarkable success in various Model United Nations (MUN) Events.[25][26]
  • The Industrial Engineering student team secured second place in the 2017 Industrial Engineering Competition (IECA).[27]

Pre-Uni

Pre-University (Pre-Uni) or Matriculation Program is an event held by President University to accept new students. The Commitment of President University to holding Pre-Uni is to always adhere to academic excellence, foster critical thinking, and foster creativity. This activity lasted for two weeks.

Cultural Fest

The Cultural Festival is one of the events at President University that aims to introduce culture from every region in Indonesia and become a place to strengthen relations between locals and foreigners. This event is held every year and attended by all President University students. This event consisted of performances from President University students who presented their respective cultures. Some of the performances displayed include National and International Dance, Singing, Retro Dance, Moral Story, Fashion Show, Madagascar Dance, Duo Singing, Contemporary Dance, Indonesian Medley, and Band.

Mr. and Ms. President University

Mr & Ms. President University is an annual internal event held by PUSU (President University Student Union) or campus BEM. This event aims to find ambassadors for President University students. These ambassadors show examples of good character on campus and in the community. The forms of character development activities for the participants are quarantine and training. The training includes public speaking, especially to answer questions in question-and-answer sessions. Participants are trained on how to behave well, not only in the real world but also in the virtual world. This activity is to find campus ambassadors and become role models for all President University students. The characteristics used for Mr. and Ms. President University 2020 are 3B + 1 T, namely Brain, Beauty, Behavior, and Talents.

Archery Club

President University Archery Club (PUAC), or President University Archery Club, is one of 32 clubs & communities on the President University campus, which was inaugurated by Dr. Agus Canny, M.A., M. Sc. as Vice Chancellor, Student & Alumni Affairs, President University in 2018. The President Archery Club was founded by President University and targeted student achievements in this sports field. The President University Archery Club (PUAC) has received support from the President/CEO of PATA Indonesia (Pacific Asia Tourism Association), Purnomo Siswoprasetjo, to hold the President University Archery Championship in 2019.[29] This activity is a national-level archery competition organized by the President University Archery Club. In its implementation, the President University Archery Championship collaborates with the D'khayangan Archery Center (DAC) and the Indonesian Archery Association (PERPANI). The archery club itself has at least 40 students as members.[30]

  • Multinational Community - President University students come from all corners of Indonesia and abroad, such as China, Vietnam, and Laos.
  • Work Experience - President University provides an internship program for a maximum of 2 semesters for all students to prepare students for a career path.
