Sangatta is a town located in, as well being the capital of, East Kutai Regency, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. It is however, not an autonomous city and consists of the urban sections[1] of two districts within the regency, North Sangatta (including a mainly urban community, but with the larger district containing 123,067 inhabitants in mid 2023) and South Sangatta (a largely rural area with 30,760 inhabitants in mid 2023).[2] It is the location of East Kutai coal mine, which is one of the biggest coal mines in the world, as well as the biggest in Asia.[3][4]
Until being split into 4 districts on 31 October 2005, Sangatta existed as a separate district.[5] Bengalon was also part of Sangatta (not mentioned as of 1999),[6][7] but it is not exactly known when it was separated from Sangatta.
