Shonar Beri (Bengali: সোনার বেড়ি; also known in English as Chains of Gold) is a 1987 Bengali documentary film.[1][2] Written and directed by Tareque Masud, the film was his directorial debut.[3] The film was also the first video documentary[4] and was an early attempt at dealing with gender issues in Bangladesh.[5] It deals with the oppressed condition of women in Bangladesh,[6] portraying everyday subordination of women under the Islamic regulation in Bangladeshi society.[7]
