The 1981 award

[edit]

It seems there's been a mythology generated about how the 1981 award was forgotten about / omitted, for some reason.

However now that Papers Past includes issues of the Press over that period - it seems that what actually happened is that the awards changed from early in the year to late in the year in 1982, with the 1982 award covering about 18 months.

The 1980 Silver Scroll was awarded to Sharon O'Neill in April 1980 for the best composition of 1979: https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19800421.2.45

The 1981 Silver Scroll was awarded to Paul Schreuder in April 1981: https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19810421.2.129

In 1982 the first New Zealand Music Week was held in October, and the Silver Scroll award was to be made in September: https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19820921.2.108.17 and duly awarded to Stephen Young. https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19820921.2.76

The Press doesn't list the 1983 winner, but confirms that the award ceremony was to be in September of that year. https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19830929.2.89.6

And in 1984, Hammond Gamble's win was reported in early October. https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19841004.2.112.7

Now to wait for the music experts to find this note... Daveosaurus (talk) 11:04, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
