Isnt alresford train station good? ignoring the one in hampshire i mean

When I was a kid back in the 1950s I spent a summer in Elmstead Heath and went to the station every day. My Uncle Ted worked there and He taught me the meaning of the bells which rang as a result of signals on the telegraph. All the trains were hauled by steam locos in those days and they all had their own name (as well as a number). Many of the trains on the line were named after Div One football clubs. Uncle Ted worked on his own most of the time. Levers in the signal box were locked to pass control to the levers next to the level crossing which he operated.Bebofpenge (talk) 09:18, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The siding was going out of use even then but trucks of sand and gravel went out every few days. If more than one truck was to be collected, they had to be coupled before the goods train arrived. The trucks were moved by long poles with a curved iron point. The point was pushed under the wheel of the truck and then, using the pole as a lever, the truck was edged forward. At these times the signal box was also manned (to operate the points for the siding).Bebofpenge (talk) 09:18, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The footbridge between the platforms was virtually unused. When the line was electrified the central span was raised to make room for the overhead power lines. This made it even less likely to be used.Bebofpenge (talk) 09:18, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
