Although this winery's owner is notable by any standards, the winery itself does not seem to be, so it would be a good idea to merge this article with that on the owner. -- Blanchardb  -MeMyEarsMyMouth- timed 16:23, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the tag as a bad idea. Wineries of this class and size are notable. See Category:Napa Valley wineries. There are hundreds of sources[1] - easily meets corporate notability standards. They are very different things. A race car driver and a winery are totally different articles - putting them together would be a Portmanteau. They would be in the wrong categories, navigation, etc. Moreover, there is far too much material here to put in another article, as well as specialized templates, location tags, etc. There's plenty precedent for a famous person and their namesake business (e.g. Newman's Own) - in fact a high proportion of all businesses are named after their founder. I see you've reverted. Please reconsider - it seems to be a silly issue. If you can't justify the tag I'll go ahead and remove it again in a little while. "doesn't seem to be notable" doesn't make sense - it satisfies all notability criteria so the presumption is that it's notable. If you want to start saying that 40,000 case per year napa wineries that get lots of press there's a bigger issue that really ought to be taken up on the relevant notability guidelines or wine project. Wikidemo (talk) 17:49, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. I reverted because the tag's removal was done on the grounds of WP:SNOWBALL when there has in fact never been any discussion. Please keep in mind that a mergeto tag is not a deletion tag, so if you oppose the merger that gives you plenty of time to address the issue that led me to insert this tag (either by making the necessary corrections or by simply stating your position). I've been aware of articles that have been tagged for merger for more than a year without any action or even discussion.

Although I do not think a comparison with Newman's Own is adequate (Newman's Own is unquestionably notable even in the minds of people who are unaware that the name refers to Paul Newman), if the winery is notable independently from its owner, the article can stay. -- Blanchardb  -MeMyEarsMyMouth- timed 18:00, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it's quite the opposite - every Newman's Own product has a picture of the guy and his daughter on the packaging, and a statement from him as well. Yet plenty of people don't know the winery is connected to Mario Andretti. It's not marketed as such. Leaving aside the question of stale tags, a merge tag that doesn't have a reasonable chance of resulting in a merge shouldn't stay on the article because it degrades the page. Based on that, and this comment[2] I'm removing again. Thanks, Wikidemo (talk) 18:15, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notability

[edit]

After reading the article, I can't find any sentence that shows the winery is notable, that it is more than the hobby of a famous guy. The article should be expanded if it is indeed notable. For comparison, I wrote the Chinese article on Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, and it is notable because its red wine was the winner of the Judgement of Paris, which puts Napa Valley on the map of fine wines, among other facts.
