Could someone please clarify the county location issue. I assume it is in the part of Oxfordshire which used to be part of Berkshire. Wimstead 10:33, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

County borders can be a contraversial subject. There is not a definitive map of the English counties, this area is a good example of where maps differ. The location, according to the political boundaries of England, is in Oxfordshire. Oxfordshire County Council will be responsible for the services in that area. However, the Postal address is Berkshire. This has more to do with the logistics of delivering mail.

The postal address reflects the traditional County to which the house belonged - Berkshire. The house was constructed, altered and presented to the National Trust when it was in Berkshire FOR all purposes. It has only been since 1974 that there has been any doubt. Administratively the property is in Oxfordshire. However the Department of the Environment stated on 1st April 1974 that the boundary changes were only for local government administration purposes - they were not designed to re-arrange traditional loyalties or geography. 163.1.117.148 (talk) 22:51, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
