Channel changes in Australia

[edit]

The reason for channel 0 not being on early TVs is that prior to 1960 it was not allocated at all. The same for 5a which is the original channel 5 frequency. Channel 4 was immediately below it. In 1960 it was realised that some channels were not becoming available in time to allow the country stations to begin transmissions so big changes were made. Channel 0 was added, 1,2 and 3 moved up to allow 0 to fit. 3 ended up in the lower third of the FM band and FM Trials were shut down. 4 and 5 moved to the middle and top of the FM band with old channel 5 frequency becoming 5a. 6 to 10 were reshuffled to allow 11 to be added. The original 10 channel plan was effectively expanded to 13 channels. Conversions and retuning were offered from 1960 although for capital cities only minor retuning was needed as 2,7,9 and 10 only changed slightly.
